ee She Could Keep a Secret. ‘We're bound to be equal to you “we form- men, d the Mason’s wife ; eda secret society of our own last night. “Indeed,” said the Worshipful Mas- ter, composedily ; “then I hope, my dear, Four project will be successful, ‘Js it a benevolent society or what ” “That's none of your business. It is a secret society, and we’ve sworn a lemn oath not to divulge anything re- lating to it.” . j ‘Very good, my dear,” observed the Worsl i] ful Master, returning to his paper; “l’msureI donot wish you to violate your oath.” ‘It wouldn’t matter if you did, I wouldn't, You keep your secrets close enough—and tothink of that stupid M Furbelow! She could recollect | ither the gripor the sign. It took us an hourto teach her. When I gave her the sign, like this (suiting the action | she would make it in’ this | Her stupidity would have | been exasperating if it hadn’t been) ridiculous ; and as for learning the grip, hy, she would have it that it was this way—give me your hand a minute— there, she would have it that way, while it was this way; and the password! she couldn't keep it in her memory two told ue WOrTUO) W Vy, tial ! ha Ww minutes. Over and overagain I her it was ‘Be justand fear not,’ and the would have it, ‘Swear not at all,’ or ‘Do unto others as you would be done by,’ ha! ha! We almest despaired of gotting it through her head. But we made her understand at last. Ob, yes; weare going to have a flourishing ociety, and we can be as secret about it as you men are about yours.” Then the lady went off to attend to her household duties, and the Worship- ful Master smiled.— J onhker's Statesman. S <> - A Dog that Understands. —_ There is a Newfoundland dog of the historian’s acquaiotance, Lion by name, who gives daily proof of his compre- lepsion of what is eaid to him. A lady called on bis mistress the other day. During her call Lion came in rather slyly, lay down on the parlor carpet und went asleep. The conversatioa ran and the visitor said finally :-— “What a bandsome Newfoundland x you have! Lion opened one eye. “Yes,” au said bis | never equalled on P. EK | Geff's. iper GUL, mistress “he is avery good , tukes excellent care of the childien. Lion opened the other eye and waved | complacently his tail to and fro along © carpet. “When the baby goes out he always eoes with her and I feel perfectly sure then ihat no harm can come to her,” bis mistress went on. Lion’s tail jumped up and down viclently on the carpet. “And he is so gentle to them all, and such a playmate and companion to them that we would not take a thousand dollars for him.” Lion’s tail now went up and down, 7 aa , | Au to and fro, round and round with great and undisguished glee. “But,” suid his mistress, “Lion has one serious fault.” Total subsidence of Lion’s tail, (ogether with the appearance of an ex- pression of great concern on his tace. “He will come in bere with his dirty feet and lie down on the carpet, Ewhen [ have told him time and agaia that he rausn’t do it.” Here Lion arose with an air of the tmost dejection and humiliation and slunk out of the room with his lately exuberant tail totally crestfallen. Ee 2 Ea A Young Lady’s Neat Retort. One of the neatest retorts ever made ao Cambridge, Mass..—nota bad soil for good things—was a brief response lately given by a young lady to the under-graduate who offered her, with some hesitation, his seat in the horee ‘ar. She gotin with an older compa- nion. The car was crowded and two young men sat near. One gave his seat at once to the elder lady ; the other kept his place. His friend asked him —disguising it, however, in German— why he didnot give his place to the young lady. He answered in the same language :—‘ Because she is not pretty enough.” After a little reflection, however, he too, arose and surrendered The young lady took it and thanked him in—German.— New Orleans Picayune. his seat. -—-- The First Hclipzge.
