CHARLOTTETOWN Races Huge A thrilling boat race program was witnessed at Wood Islands yesterday afternoon when four fast classes and one special race were run off amid the loud ap- plause of the large gathering. An ideal location for the races was chosen outside the bar-pass- eway. thus permitting the peo- pa to gather on a cleared pro- montory for a. perfect view of the races. Viewed from above, all the boats and their positions were in clear view of the spectators. The promontory had been cleared to allow parking and standing space, and also room for the dining saloon, refreshment booth, dancing platform, and sports area. The races were the big draw- ing card and were run off effici- cntly by the officials in charge, without hold-ups or accidents. At the conclusion of the race program, the crowd enjoyed a delicious supper prepared by the ladies of the Women's Institute of Wood Islands, West and East, Bellevue and Melville. The High- land pipers Brill Bears and Hugh MaoPherson. were on hand to de- light the crowd with the very popular highland pipe music. Field Sports The latter part of the afternoon was taken up with field sports under the direction of Brig. W. W. Reid and Art Perry, of the Department of Physical Fitness. Each class was well represented, and competition was keen. The married women's race captured the interest of the spectators, as the nimble ladies tore down the run- way with plenty of speed. The shot-put completed the after- noon's sports with a 30-foot put -by Stewart MacMillan. The light 6 cylinder race, the first one of the afternoon was a close run all the way with the four boats in close following or- der. At the finish the boat owned by Laurie Herring. Murray Har- bor, pulled to the front to cop the first prize. ' The heavy 6 cylinder had two entries which gave the spectators a thrilling time as the two boats raced parallel almost to the fin- ish before the boat owned by Vin- cent Turpell of Pictou island pull- ed out to take the race by half a length. ' The V-8 race was won by Angus MacNeil of Murray Harbor, who had little difficulty taking the lead right to the finish. The last two boats owned by Henry Ric- hards of Wood lslands and James Singleton of Belle River gave a thrilling race. the two boats com. ing in with almost a photo finish. The free-for-all was the most spectacular race of the afternoon with) eight boats manocuvering for position.
