PREATE ON THE PACIFIC RAILWAY CONTRACT CONTINUED. As in duty bound, tie leaders of the Oppositio. are making a good show of op- position tv the Pacitic Railway Contract. ‘They cou! { not, in Parliament, du as the Montreal Arvid, and many leading Grits eutside of Parliament have done. They could not appyove et the Contract; because if they do so they would have to support the Goverument; and that would never do. Besides it is right that so supremely an im portant a matter should be thoroughly ventilated; and if the Opposition should ceas@ to oppose, this covld not be done. So, after tie applause which followed the elosing sentences of dir Charles Tupper's masterly ¢fort had subsided, and after Mr. McDougal had explained that he didn’t write certain articles in the Ottawa Citizen, up rose th rising hope of the Liberals of Canada—tae Leader of the Opposition. For some ‘ime his speech was mainly com- taunts and sneers which posec ol i , he flung about in great profusion but fnally he settled down to the business i1 hand, and exerted al! his ingenuity in exposing the faults and worth- lessness of the details of the bargain. Che coutractor: will make enormous tortunes— of course they will: the standard of the Union Pacitic Railway, up to which the contractors are bound to build, is not suf- ficiently high or definite ; there is nothing in the contract about ballast, ete., etc. These were his objections. His speech ‘is generally ! warded as brilliant but weak. it certain!) was not so strong as that of Dr. Tuppe: ; aud as Mr. Blake is a clever man and a very forcible advocate—he is the liero 0! several disturbing speeches— the weakness of his speech must have been owing to the weakness of his cause. HE WINTER PORT. lt appears irom facts brought out in re- ply to Mr. Richey's question as_ to ‘< whether the statement that goods per 55 Polynesian, which had arrived at Halifax a ; —* ; fortnight before, were on the 7th inst. stili undelivere:. at Quebec,is correct, and if so, what precautions, if any, have been taken to preclude the recurrence of such incon- venience; also, whether any and what guar- antec is. offered asto the tine within which, after the receipt by the Intercol- onial jvail Vay, ot yoods landed by steamship at Halifax, such goods will be elivered at Quebec, Mon- treal, and ‘Toronto respectively,” that importers .m the Upper Provinces lose largely (in wint of time) by having their English goods sent vid Boston instead of via Halifax. itis to be hoped that this fact will be widely circulated in Ontario, Quebec anc. PEpESTRIANISM.—The St. John 7'elegraph says: ‘‘ Foster, the Portland pedestrian, has accepted an invitation to walk in a 506 mile square heel-and-toe contest at Uharlottetown, on Christmas day. He leaves St. John next Tuesday. Joseph Leggett will also compete. The prizes are $40 to first; $20 to second ; $10 to third, and $5 to fourth. , Guost Srory.—A story comes from Windsor that the College woods are haunted, and that.strange, auearthly sounds are heard in the vicinity of that weird locality, ‘‘ The Devil’s Punch Bowl.” Several of the stnr- dents of the College have, at different times, heard sepulchral laughs coming from the in- terior of the D. P. B., but investigation failed to prove anything. One young gen: tleman selemniy swore that be saw a misty figure, clad in white, flitting about through the woeds, and pointed it out to a com- panion, but his companion did not see it, Another gentleman states that he heard these strange laughings about 12 o'clock one night. A lady of Windsor is ready to take her oath that one afternoon last week she saw a man roaming arouud through the woeds, dressed in old clothes, with a high red cap on his head and a gun in his haad, followed bya dog, a la Rip Van Winkle, who kept ahead of her all the time, no matter which way she turned. Altogether, Windsor is in a high state of excitement over these spiritual mani- festations.-—//alifax Herald. ih ai llhnllenacheseli How tHe Bowanza was Srrvex.—The risibilities of the good people of New Lon- don have been much excited of late over the reported gold find by John Cann,a crafty negro well-digger and stumper, who re- sides at, or near, Kensington. It is a good joke and no one appears to appreciate it as much by half as Cann. It appears that he was engaged by a farmer to dig a well. When the work was’ about com- pleted, the negro obtained a_ few vich gold quartz from a _ gentle- man who recently returned frem Colorado, and when he had struck a good stream of water he emerged from the well with the quartz in his hand, and in an apparent fever of excitement, exhibited them to the gentleman for whom he was working, Stating at the same time, that as soon, as he found then: the water rushed in, and he had to quit digging. In the mind of the farmer a bonanza was struck. He immediately closed the well; compared the quartz with those from the mines of Colorade; and latterly sent them to Halifax for the pur- pose of being tested. It is stated that thou- sands were offered for an acre of the land surrounding the well, and promptly refused A square foot of the farm could not be pur- chased at any price. But the ‘‘ Cat is now out of the bag” aud the farmer declares that if that black rascal ever appears on his farm again, his whole carcass won’t be worth more than the market price of his heels in a glue-factory.
