New York Stock: NEW YORK (AP)-The stock market displayed many signs of basic strength last week despite a moderate decline. The fall came after three weeks of advancing prices. Never at any time did it get out of hand. Moderation was the keynote. Volume was moderate. about five per cent under the daily aver- age so far this year. The world series had a lot to do with the relatively small amount of business. me uuartusn rage at Monday. October 4, 1954 60 stocks lost. 80 cents on the week and closed at. 8136.20. That was 80 cents under the peak of the year attained the previous Friday and touched again Tuesday. RAILROAD DROP IIALTED One thing worried technicians for a time this week-the rail- roads. Carriers were depressed to the point where some feared their weakness could cause the rest of the market to topple in sy athy. One railroad line after another reported disappointing earnings. The Association of American Rail- roads predicted fourth quarter freight traffic would be between eight and nine per cent under a year ago. Thursday. railroads got down to a level that technicians considered, critical. Then the decline haltcdi and a buying rush developed in rails of such strength that the en-i tire market was carried up.
