It will he interesting to many GUAR- DIAN readers to learn that Lieut H. R. Campbell. son of the late Captain Ronald Campbell of Cape Traverse, O Mr. Campbell now holos a senior lientenahtfs commission, having passed United States naval examining board. THE Gulinnmt has received a copy ot the Bane (Mass) Gazette containing a letter from Lieut Campbell to ' his cousin, Mrs. Jennie Campbell Spooner of Barre. The letter was written on board United States ship St Louis. on Porte- mouth, N. H. July 11th, 1897. ' Alter a short account ot their voy- age south Lieut Campbell. says ;g__, ;, On the`20th"itie‘troop§' arrtvedftrotn Key West, and our Captain was sent in charge of the landing party. We land- ed 5000 the *dist day, after a sharp tight in the morning while driving the Spani. ards from _ the town of Daquira. 1 landed about 300, and had the pleasure of taking the first heavy gun on shore; it was a dynamite gun. and weighed about 1200 pounds. We succeeded in landing the whole force, including 3000 Cubans who were brought from a place 120 miles west of Daquira, in three days. Daquira and Altares, where the troops were landed, are small ports about two miles apart, lying about tcn and twelve miles east of Santiago. The day after landing, Rooseve1t’s Rough Ridcrs had a sharp tight with iho enemy, and succeeded in driving 3500 of them out oi their trenches about tive miles west cf Altares; our side lost nine killed and thirty wounded, wli‘la tliirty»scven cf lh_e enemy were found dead. I went to the battlefield next day and picked up some empty shells, some of which I will send you with a piece of cable. After landing the troops. we were detailed to patrol duty off Cape de Cruz,l05 miles west of Santiago, and were on our station on the 3rd. when the Spanish fleet was de- stroyed. On the morning ei the 4th we went to Santiago to Lreport to the Admiral, and found to our surprise that the great Fight had been fought; we were very much dissappointed in not being there to witness it: but were justly proud of the result.Tne Spaniards deserve great credit for the manner in which they manoeuvered their ships; they certaihlv made a splendid charge, staked all, and lost it with- out a murmur. During F the day we received on board Adwirul Cervera Rear-Admiral1’erados, Capt. Eulate of the Vizcaya, and Capt. One ot the Admirante Oquende. Admillil CGIVGTWS son is also on board as dag- omcer; altogether we have 110 ofdcers and 600 men from the different ships. The odicers are a line looking lot ot men. and very gexitlemanly; they gave the!! word of role u coming on board, than as prisoners of war, with ' the en- ception of one who wo_uld not give his parole and has been kept closely con- fined during the passag;-sy; be mai _lf ' ther o portum' upvu #rn + izii;elIilei'ii.o Capt? He is not en rapport with the robust sp'rlt of this community. He has . tco much regard for` law and order-a thing unknown in the United States mining camp. He doesn’t drink whiskey at Red Mike`s-fusial oil, we call it- he doesn`t go on for the ironclad sou- brettis of the dance halls; he dosen’t draw his gun without provocation; he dcesu’t shake dice, play faro. shoot craps; in short, Fawcett has none of the virile qualities that are needed in this progressive city. He is not sociable, and, more than that his personal habits are offensive to many of us, Most of our citizens con- sider it healthy to change our under- clothes and take a bath once at year, whether we need it or not. We our- selves .zave had one bath and two' shaves since the summer of 1996. The rules of hygiene, as taught inthe schools of the effete east. don’t apply when the thermometer drops to seventy below. Most ol our prominent citizens, we re- peatthink that Fawcett is altogether too scrupulous about his underclotlies and ablut’ons.
