Yesterday afternoon as the Poy e Creek, south bound,passenger train sped round the curve nearing the bridge, the engineer was horrified to see a woman on the the bridge railroad track, carrying in ber arm ap infant nd le ding by the hand a child of perhaps three years of age. The Crossiloy engineer at once applied the air brake and blew the danger signal, but he saw it was impossible to stop the train be fore the pont where the woman She heard the trau approaching, turned and looked at saw the horrors of her situation in © quick, glance. Below the heavy rains had filled the chasm until it bad become a torrent. To jump from the bridge would be to find death in the water ; to remain where she was a few seconds longer would be to meet instant death. Several persons were near the track at the time and who saw her situation, made signs to the engieeer to stop, bul he was powerless, although he strugglad until the sweat stood out in great drops from every pore. Then he rushed forward toward the rront of the locomotive with the in tention of essaying the daring teat of seizing the woman and dragging her to the cow catcher.
