By the courtesy of the members of the Law Students Society, a number of their lay friends erjoyed tne privilege of listen ing, last nignt,to the last of s series of lectures delivered during the past winter by the Hon. Edward J. Hodg-on, Master of the Rolls of this Province. Tbe dry bones of the law at first thougatdo not usually strike the average layman as an uncommonly ixteresting subject. But knowledge of the learned judge’s brilliant career atthe Bar brought out alot of gentlemen who anticipsted a Jecture wor- thy of a gifted lecturer, discoursing ona subject likely to call forth all hie enthusi- asim anddisplay his professional k: @ “ledge. Nor was One present disappointed. Even the essential principles of law as explained md he descr bed the ; a:sions which dominated these men while i. ey occupied s-as Dpov the bench. Carefully-studied, valuable advice was given tbe students regarding oratory. There was one kind—*spread-eag'e” 1° is callei—which be adv sea them to avcid. He drew a picture of the eloquence of Cicero and the power « f Demosthenes, and @ haps unconsciously carried away by lis subject, exempl fied by his own elo-~ quevce, more forcibly than ia any other wat, the precepts be was «triving to teach. Dr. Hodgsn’s peroration was in his best style, and when he eat down he was thauked by prelonged applanse ; after whic, on behalf ef the law studeut-, Mr. James Hyodman read ard presented this a ‘dress. To The Honorable Edward Jarvis Hodg- soo, LL. D., D.C. L. &:. Srr;—We the members of the Law Students Agsoziation of Charlottetown, not unmindful of the benefits we have derived from the course of lectures which it has been our privilege to attend during the last few monthe, wishto convey to you, sir, by the learned judge were imbued with a | our sincere thanks for the trouble you have | fascination that held the attention very closely. of lawyers the bigh ideals they should set up the digcity of their profession, their conduct towards clients,—all these matters were impressed with force upon his hear- ers. With the wisdom gained from years of long experience ani observation he rointed out the course for each to pursue, and directed attention to the danger of 8 rssiog from the proper causr, 'n response to any of the many temptatioas that may cross the path. His Lordship’a lecture, however, was not confirzed to technical details of the pro< fession. Probably, when the audience cons entirely ot students, he confines himself more to these details. But Jast night, with that desire to interest which characterizes him on the p'atform, he al» lowed himself to branch eff into a retro-~ spect of the growth of English law, and a description of the «mincent men who,’ for sists the past two hundred years, have by their brilliant genius and high principles made British law occupy the hiyhest standard in the world. And here the delightful qualities of Dr. Hodgson, ax # raconteur were d splayed. Anecdote after anecdote of those dead ard reat meno of tre English Beach were related. There were exceptions, he said, to the high standard of past days more particularly in two cases, chose of Judge Jeffries and Judge Scroggs. With the satire which be handles with a master hand, the lecturer fairly convul-ed bis audience, :8 gone Zz nes ipo cascuaabeanalll en The Royal is the highest grade baking powder known. We recognize the disadvantages under which we labour in not having a law school in this Province; but, happily, through your untiring efforts and learned tutorship we have reaped advantages equal and in many respects superior to thove offered in any school of law, Pozsessed of a wide range of knowledge, facility of expression and clearness of direction, youare specially qualified to guide the atudent through the mazy intricacies of the law. You have placed within our reach a knowledge acquired by the experi-~ ence of years in the profession. Its connection with all mercantile transactions makes it necessary tbat a lawyer at least shout have a thorough knowledge of ite underlying principles. Taking its origin from the mutual dealings of right-minded men, it may be said to be in the words of the great jurist Addision:—*‘A universal law adapted to all times and races, and all places and circumstances, being foun ded upon those great fundamental principles of right and wrong which are immutable and eternal.” Into this fer reaching subject we have already made considerable progress, but Laving | we do not flatter ourselves upon acquired as yet a thorough kuowledge of | 1 7 - ! the law of Contracts.
