GUARDIAN Dunk River The Dunk River Dairying Com- pany of Bedeque is probably the oldest business of its kind in the Province. The factory of the Dunk River Dairying Company was built by Fenton T. Newberry in 1883 for the purpose of cheese-making. For some years the business who car- ried on by Mr. Newtierry under a contract with the patrons where- by he was paid a "M rate for manufacturing and marketing the cheese. In 1892 a committee of the pat- rons was appointed with a view to reorganizing along what is now known as co-operative lines. Its efforts met with success and in 1893 the company was incorpor- ated under special act-necessary capital having been subscribed by a number of the prominent farm- ers within the district. At the end of the first year as an incorporated company Colin Wright. who was the first Sec- retary. retired and the position was taken over by William Call- beck. On his "retirement at the end of fifty years service a pre- sentation was made to Mr. Call- beck coupled with an address pay- ing tribute to him as the sulciing force throughout the years in es- tabllshing the business on so firm a basis with regard to both its financial standing and its integ- rity. He was succeeded by his son. Ralph Callbeck. who was follow- ed by Lt.-Col. U. G. Dawson, V.D.. and by the present secre- tary. Major John S. Wright. E.D. Unique Record C. M. Freetown f CHARLOTTETOWN Dairying Company Of Bedeque Has Interesting History Modernization iif Dunk lliver Plant About complete Yesterday was a red letter day at the Dunk River Dairying Com- pany factory at Bedeque when members of the company and in- vlted guests gathered for the put- ting into operation of a new moulding and wrapping machine. Over the past several years a pro- gram has been in" effect of mod- latlon of new machinery and with this equipment the proiect is about complete. The machine is known as the Blanchet moulding and wrapping machim and present for the or- casion was the inventor himself. Mr. H. Blanchet.of Drummond- ville. Que.. who arranged the in- stallation and saw that it was properly set up arid working effi- clently. For the benefit of those pre- sent a batch of butter was mould- ed and wrapped. The bulk butter is simply inserted at the top and comes out wrapped in the new type one pound prints which are very neat and handy sized pack- ages. It operates at the rate of 1500 pounds an hour and is so controlled that if something goes wrong. such as a wrapper get- ting caught. the whole operation stops. With this new machine the but- ter comes direct from the churn instead of having to go into cold storage first thus saving time and labor. Present for the occasion yester- day were: H. J. Coupled with the painting is landscaping program is in effect. The grounds adjoining all the buildings are to be beautlfied with the planting of flowers. shrubs and hedges. The area surrounding the Fire De- partment building has always been kept attractive and continues to be so.
