Bell Manufacturing Co Biove and Hard ware Merchants, Montague, June 7—\m 9 a made of | ‘ | THE DAILY ABSENTMINDED MAN, Ife Moved, but When He Tried to Find His Mouse He Failed, Ao absentwinded man mored to this city from a neighboring town last week. l‘e and his wife staid at a hotel while they were finding a house, but his busi- ness prevented the man from doing his share of the house bunting, and the task fell, as if often does, upon the wife. She at last found a place which suited her and she took her husband to see it. It was satisfactory, and they came down town, he to go back to his business and she to attend to the moving of their goods from the railway car to the house. Her task was soon accomplished, and in a short time she had put away most of the things, settled a pedroom and got the kitchen and dining +voom in order. By 5:30 in the afternoon she and the new girl bad the first dinner in the new flat all ready for the head of the house. In the meantime the absentminded husband was plodding through the work at Lis office. About the time that the plates were being put on the table at his howe be began to feel the need of food, and he locked up his office and started for the street car. When he reached the street, he suddenly remembered that he had not notice! the address of his new residence. He stood on the cornera long while and tried to think what the name of the street was. He consulted the di- rectory, but none of the street names was familiar—in fact, he bad not been in the city long enough to know any of the streets by mame except that on which his office was situated and the location of the hotel where he had staid temporarily. He looked aimlessly at the crowded street cars and envied the men and women who knew where their bomes were. The pangs of hunger were increasing momentarily, but no sug- gestion of the locality of his home came to him. ; His mind on that point was a perfect blank. He had even forgotten to notice in what style of building the flat was situated. Cursing his stupidity, he made his way to the hotel, ate his din- ner in disgusted solitude and went to bed. In the meantime his wife was nearly frantic at his absence. Night baving fallen, she was afraid to venture out, and she, too, went to bed alone and spent a sleeplessnight. In the morning she made her way down town, found the office and threw herself weeping in- to her husband’s arms. That afternoon the man bought a map of the city and marked accurately upon it his place of residence, and then he had a hundred cards printed containing his house ad- dress. — Chicago Chronicle. ne - —_ Fields For Science. ‘‘There are three fields in which I think hypnotism should be used.’’ ‘*What are they?’’ **Politics, football and bargain rush- es.’’—Chicago Record. In 1815 the royal mews at Charing Nross were standing and on the actual site now occupied by Nelson's column @ long wooden shed was placed, and in it was the skeleton of a whale of great jimensions. Through it the writer walked from end to end. Opp site stood, as now they stand, spring gardens, where in old times the beaus and belles of the court of Charles {I disported themselves. There in a house was located ‘‘the learned pig.”’ Bystanders desirous of seeing its per- formance stood in a circle, and within a smaller one playing cards were appar- ently indiscriminately thrown down. Onlookers, possibly confederates, named a particular card, and the pig trotted round and placed his snout on the nam- ed card without an error. From that exhibition, the writer, in the same house (he thinks), was taken and introduced to ‘‘the Hottentot Ve- nus,’’ an ebony damsel clad in gauzy garments of the most flimsy kind, who displayed her figure by proudly trav- ersing and circling round the room in which she gave her receptions. Issuing thence, the writer was taken to the horse guards parade to sec the cannon used by the French as a mortar Guring the siege of Cadiz, 1812. It was on a carriage in a horizontal position, and the writer, lifted by his father, was thrust inside the muzzle, and, strug- cling somewhat, was, with a little dif- ficulty, extracted trom his confined po- sition.—-Loudon Sketch. A bevy of young women cropped ipto his tent one day his usual hour for opening it and found him sewing a perore t in a blanket. ‘*See how he blushes,’’ exclaimed one of the visitors. ‘‘We have caught him doing squaw’s work. ’’ ‘‘Why, that’s his natural color,’’ gig- gled another. ‘‘He always blushes.’’ ‘*Yes, young ladies,’’ said the Indian in perfectly good English, ‘the blushes t.r some of the civilized and enlighten- C { au ’ xl white Americans of the nineteenth “entRry.”’ he visitors joined him in blushing and shortly afterward went out without further remarks. —Youth’s Companion. Is “By Jingo!” Basque? Prince L. L. Bonaparte, many years a9, claimed ‘‘By jingo’’ as an English borrowing from the Basques. The Sou- letin Basques say ‘Bai Jinko,’’ mean- ine ‘*Yes, God,’’ not ‘‘By God’’ or ‘*Par Dieu.’’ The k would easily be- come g in the mouth of a foreigner. Basque sailors and soldiers have always been ubiquitous. Some time ago I was atan inn at Larraina (the thrashing fioor) in Soule, where the host, who had gained the queen's medal for serv- ice in the French army in the Crimean war, repeated ‘* Bui Jinko’’ hundreds of times during the day. No doubt the Lasques in the time ot Rabelais, the first authcr to put Basque in print (though he did so rather clumsily) had the same habit. It must always lave attracted the attention of foreign- ers, Who would readily imitate it.— Notes and Queries. words A Sorcerer Elected. M. A Polite Obstacle, An incident reported to have occurred in Japan exhibits an enviable standard of courtesy on the part of the natives of that country which is respectfully submitted to that outraged pedestrian, the wheelman’s victim. An American riding a bicycle in Tokyo accidentally knocked down a venerable native. The aged victim gathered himself together, deferentially approached the rider and humbly begged pardon for being ‘‘in his honorable way.’’ Acknowledged. **I do not claim,"' said the thought- ful member of the club, ‘‘that the infiu- ence of fashion is entirely harmful.
