Extracts from the Rebel Chiefs Diary. | HIS VISIONS AND MEDITATIONS—THE SCHEME TO CAPTURE THE NORTHCOTE OUTLINED— HIS LONGINGS FOR INDIAN HELP. Following are extracts from Riel’s diary captured at Batoche :— O, my God, I firmly believe that by Thy ‘power, for the sake of Jesus Christ Thy well beloved eon, the consecration of this milk haa produced from it a delicious milk rs that in drinking it [ drink the milk of | Thy Divinity, and in such drinking I drink | of the springs of etcrnal life. | O, my God, I pray Thee in the name of | Jesus Christ, of Mary, of Joseph, aud St. | John the Baptist, pardor. me the sins I | have committed among the Crees, among |the Sioux, the Blackfeet, the Blood la- 'dians, the Saulteaux, the Sarcy, the As- | siniboines, the Gros Ventres, the Pieganis, the Nez Percos, the Redants, the Oreilles, | cause them to come from the rising sun ; | that Thy charity may bring them swiftly to q) Us on the wings of the wind those who come | to us from the setting sun; that Thy power imay send them quickly to us from the jnorth, that Thy providence may despatch | them to us from the south. | the sake of Jesus Christ, Mary, Joseph, and /St. John the Baptist, cause that they all come to us speedily, armed with good weapons and with a great quantity of ammupition. | O, my God, I pray Thee in the name of | Jesus Christ, Mary, Joseph, and St. John the Baptist, condescend to remember Alderic Ouimet and all our French Can- |adians who are with Middleton. 0, dis- pose their hearts and minds in my favor, in iavor of Thy doings, and in the midst of the battle have love without limits to save them that greatness of soul which will lead them either to lay down their arms or make peace with us. { 19th April._—I hear the voice of the | Indiane. He comes to join me. He arrives from ihe north. His mind is of war. } serene 19th April —I see five horsemen ; they lare Metis.—Deseribes the color of their | horses. | 19th April.—Sees a great namber of savages on the other side of the river. Other Indians come every day to increase (our numbers. They have the same end as 'ourselves. Courage, our people ; courage. | 19th April.—About Joseph Delorme being nearly taken, Riel says, God wills that he should hold order here. He ought to take care not to be discovered or taken. Earnest prayers for guidance and success follow. Thou only cans’t give it. With- out Thee we are nothing. Prayers speci- ally to open a way for his commissioners to the United States. If no way open, open one Thyself. 20th April.—Prays for deliverance from treason, death, wounds, etc. Prays spe- cially for Michael Dumas, that he may be protected froin the dangers with which he is threatened ; and the volunteers. Prays also for Norbut Turcotte ; cover him with thy protection in battle, etc. QO, my God, i pray Thee in the name of Jesus Christ, Mary, Joseph, and John the Baptist, that Thou wouldst condescend to make use of the cable at our crossing for | the purpose of wrecking the steamboat and ' securing for us all the provisions and useful ‘articles on board—the arms also and am- / munition. 21st April —I have seen the giant. He ‘comes. He is hideous. He is Goliath. i 'He has not got the place he meant to oc- cupy. He loses his own body and all his people. There is left tc him nothing but the head. He is not willing to humble himself. He has his head cut off. The Spirit of God has spoken to me of the beautiful prairie and of the people who ought to stay there. I see him. Earnest prayer against his enemies :— ‘* Break Thou their communications. May they have no understanding to act in con- ceit,” etc. Grant us grace to meet them in such a manner as that we shall be able to conquer ‘them the one after the other. In thy pity bring on our conflicts at iniervals so lengthened that we shall be able to give battle with such arrargerments and in posi- tion so well chosen that we shall open fire at the moment snd in the place which Thy Holy Spirit shall have graciously arranged and which shall be most convenient. If Thou willest it,if Thou hast so decided the matter in Thy eternal counsels, send us Irvine twenty-four hours before Middleton, and Middleton twenty-four hours after Irvine. Send us the steamboat when we can take possession of it at our leisure. Prayer to God to hurry on the Crees, also to send in all haste the Crows and the Blackfeet and all the Indians ‘‘whom we need to accomplish at every point the work which Thou haa given us to do. April 25.—The Spirit of Ged has shown me the great firearm of Middleion. It is overthrown. It is bad because it aims ite volleys against the throne of God. 22nd April.—Hear the cry and the groaning of him who wished to fight us :-— ‘‘Teame with the army to throw myself stealthily upon the Saskatchewan. I was found, caught in the wilderness where there were no settlements among people the Flat Heads, and deing to send them all | to our assistance so that Thy pity may) O, my God,for | whom I pretended to help, but who would have none of me, Suddenly the prodigious shout of the warlike Indians struck my ear. They were numereus. ‘They were united. I heard them sing with a great deai of force and harmony. My army was afraid. It only thought of flight and to find safety in flight. But neither mysélf nor it have been able to save ourselves. Alas! alas ! War is a grand and solemn thing for those who make it for the love of truth, and jus- tice, and right. Woe, three times woe, to warriors who fight in the support of evil. They are soon driven to despair.” The butt end is separated from the bar- rel. Tho barrel itself is but an empty cup. The great firearm of Middleton is broken in three. The three pieces, however, still hold together, but it will not be a great business to sparate them entirely—the first from the second and the second from the third. It won’t take much effort to sepa- ‘rate for ever Middieton’s butt-end from his barrel and to make them two separate pieces, two pieces altogether apart from each other, the beautiful barrel of the fire- arm of Middleton. O, my God, so arrange events that Mid- dieton’s army shall remain overthrown end never get out of the evil plight in which it yesterday found itself on the road of its pride. Since the cannon of Middleton directs ita volleys against the throne of i\Thy Majesty, have the kindness, O my God, to keep it broken in three, as it is aa the result of the battle which Jesus Christ turned against it yesterday. Thou art in- finitely good. O, my God, condescend to separate entirely and in the most complete ‘fashion the butt-end from the barrel of Middleton’s firearm. Separate them always. 'O, my God, Thou Thyself hast broken in | two pieces the barrel of this great piece of ‘artillery. Complete this breakage that it ‘be definite and irreparable, that the rup- | ture of this cannon be a fatal rupture. | Oh, my Metis nation! Yon have long offended me by your horse races, by your bets on the detestable matter of horse iraces, by your stubborness,by your hateful | contentions over these bad horse races. It lis on this account that the Eternal Christ said, that “‘yesterday while sparing you I have killed your horses.”’ ! i attachmont you have to your horses. It is on thisaccount that He yesterday greatly lessened their number. At another time when I shall ask you for the service of the {horses which I lent you, you will not refuse me. O, my Metis people, I punish you lightly. That which I demand of you is obedience. April 26.— Middleton’s army has used its cannon against me awkwardly, It has done menoharm. I thank Thee, O my God,for having so protected me Middieton’s troops have givenmoacannor. They have placed it at my disposal. O, my God, give me grace to take itand make good use of it O, for the sake of Jesus Cheist, my Re- deemer, of the Blessed Virgin Mary, of St Joseph, and St. Johy the Baptist, be with me, so that I may not fail to get possession of a good cannon or two, two or three cannons with all the necessary ammunition. Thave seen the Touronds beyond me. There were several of them wounded. I said to them “‘You also? O, take courage, you play a grand role. God will make use of you and your children.’ O, my God, protect the Touronds for Christ’s sake. April 26.—-The spirit of God is speaking of the Metis nation, has said to me:—‘‘ | have come to be annoyed at it, for it is too negligent. It is not sufficiently vigilant and obedient.” O, my God, for Christ's sake have pity on it. Behold how charitable it is, how pleasant, how easily guided. Consider favorably, O Great God, the great works which the Metis nation has done for Thy greater glory, for the honor of religion, for the salvation of souis, and for the good of society. Be not angry against the French-Cana- dian Metis nation. Rather turn Thy wrath against their enemies, O my (rod: chastise them terribly. Chastise them in an extraordinary fashion, according to Thine infinite pity for Thy children. O, my God, Thou hast kindly said to me :—'‘‘] am going to be angry at it.” Deign to be angry at the Mounted Police. O, be angry against them! I accuse them before Thee, in the name cf Christ, of blaspheming the name of the Virgin, of outraging the name of the Holy Spirit, of offending by blasphemy zgainst the Holy Sacrament'of Baptism. Punish frightfully the Mounted Police. Be angry against them, for they are entirely opposed to Thy Holy Spirit of justice; to Thy spirit of right ; to Thy spirit of truth. For the love of Jesus Christ, save us wondrously. - -_<m + ‘SAN ounce of prevention worth a pound of cure’ isan old adage but true. In view of pre“ictions that this country is liable to be visited by more than an ordinary amount of contagious disease this year, it behoves all to inquire about and practice every saaitary measure, especially cleanliness, which as a pre- ventive, offers some one means of escape at least; and in this how important the article oi Soap as to quality fit for use; certainly all in- ferior grades made so by foreign substances and adulterations of a questicnable charactar, should be rejected, that there may be no taint left on the person or clothes which might ir any way invite the germs of these various dis- eases. A first-class article, made by known reliable manufactarers, is the only kind that can be safely used or recommended. In the use of astandar’ soap, like the ‘*Welcome,” made by Curtis, Davis & Co., there can be no risk, being the goods of a firm whose name on soap is a sufficient guarantee of its purity. snietnaiiited LuaTHER laces, blacking, suos horns, buttons and button fasteners, at Dorsey, Goff & Co's. se lias alten alae eels a enamels aad Sa Sn —~ oo a ne apa ntgoneny Ar 0p sey ent Be capes be , 4 a ee ae
