MAY 12. 194a Putting it up to Dr. Cyrus. Premier King re plying to Mr. Gordon Graydon, health insurance measure would come befor Premier Jones Take Over . Congratulations have already been tendered iii these columns to the new Premier, Hon. J. Walter Jones. ;\lr. Joiics' career is one of note- worthy achievement in academic and agricultur- a1 fields. reflecting credit not only upon himself but on his community and province. As a po- litical leader, the nc\v Premier has yet t0 show his ability, but lie starts with the advantage of a first-class educational background and consid- erable experience in governmental matters at home and abroad. Of course, it is doubtful if any combination of (pialities 0n the part-of any leader could will a Liberal victory in this Province at the next election. The means by which the last one was achieved are still too fresh in mind. But Premier Jones need not be unduly depressed on this account. There is much to be said for the advantag , to a new leader, of a few years spent lll Opposition. Premier Campbell used to dwell quite effectively on this theme, recall- ing his own defeat in his first election cam- paign, and his early valuable experience in the House as an Opposition member. The new government, as anticipated, repre- sents a considerable rcaligtiiiv-rnt. St. Peter's District, which formerly had two members in the cabinet, now has none, llon. Mr. Cox, re- cently appointed Minister of Public Works, hav- ing been shelved in favour of Mr. George Bar- bour, provincial head of the Wartime Prices and Trade Board. Hon. Mr. Dennis, Minister 0f Agriculture since 1936, and the most seasoned veteran in the House, has been replaced by Pre- mier Jones, who also takes over the portfolio 0f Education. Hon. Mr. Wright, formerly Pre- sident of the Council, has been demoted t0 non- portfolio rank, his post being taken by the former Speaker, Hon. W. F. A. Stewart. Hon. Mr. McGuigan remains Attorney General, and Mr. A. W. Matheson, another lawyer, has been taken in as a non-portfolio member . Mr. Wil- liam Hughes, a close associate of Mr. Jones’ in the days when they, Mr. Barbour, and Mr. Stewart constituted a sort of unofficial opposi- tion in the first Campbell Government, now takes over as Provincial Secretary Treasurer and Minister of Public Welfare. Hon. Messrs. J. A. Campbell and Marin Gallant remain as government members without portfolio. Until the voice of the electors can be heard, it is but fitting to wish the new government every success in the discharge of its responsible duties. Fitting, also, to extend condolences t0 the stalwarts who have been ousted from their offices and emoluments. They may well feel like laying to Premier Jones in the words of the old nursery rhyme: "Twas all very well to dlssernble your love; But why dld you kick us downstairs?" Empire Youth Sundz-y Empire ~Youth Sunday, which annually is be- ing more widely observed should be recognized by Canadian Boy Scouts, says the Scout Leader. ,Y0i.ith Sunday this year falls on May 16th, and should provide a. splendid opportunity for Scout Groups to hold special church parades, or to co: operate with other youth groups observing the day. The Youth Sunday Committee operates under the distinguished patronage of His Ma- jesty the King, and the Committee membership carries the names of many very distinguished British citizens and churchmen. The focal ser- vice on Empire Youth Sunday will be held in NVCSIIIIIHSLCI‘ Abbey iii London, and will be broadcast throughout the Empire. The broad- cast should be heard iii Canada about 3.30 p.ni. Eastern Daylight 'l‘ime. In previous years the speakers zit ilicse services have been a young air- man and a young naval officer. No doubt re- cognition will b0 given to Youth Sunday in churches of all denominations, and Scout Groups should join with other groups in the community i_n this important observance. Who Pays‘? Must anybody would admit that Britain's Eighth Army in Tunisia is fighting for Canada as miicl: as for Britain. Yct we wonder, says the Ottawa Journal, what Canadians would think if Britain were to bill them for their share of the cost of the Eighth Army? That is precise- ly what some Canadians-diappily only a very few-want Canada to do to Britain with respect to munitions this country may have supplied the Eighth Army. They want us to say to Britain: “We supplied your Eighth Army with so many trucks and guns and tanks; this is what you owc us." It seems all but incredible that there should be people who, the meaning of this war before them, should think and talk that way. Yet there they are. They apparently look upon this war as a sort of gigantic bookkeeping transaction, with all the United Nations keeping ledge-H. alld Wllll each iii the end summing it all up in dollars and cents and saying: "This is what is owing me." To stich minds, it doesn't matter who pays what in blood. Their test of sacrifice is money. Or Wllilf they think is money. Kellog, of New York, secretary of the News Print Service Bureau, speaking t0 the Kiwanis Club at Stanford, Conn., in the furtherance of the Canada-United States Good Will Week, which for several years has been observed by Kiwanis Clubs through- out the United States. “Canada pf her own free will and without any treaty obligations whatever, went into World War II in defence of human decency and individual rights on September 3, 1939. At that time the personnel of her navy was 1,800, of her army 4,500 and of her air force 4,000. Now she has 5,500 in navy services, 445,000 in the active army plus 100,000 in re- serve, and 200,000 in the air service. A greater accomplishment in three and a half years starting from scratch would b: hard ‘to find anywhere." After all Premier Aberharfs prediction of a province flowing with milk and honey, not to mention money if the Social Crediters were given a chance, it must be discouraging to the sick Premier of Alberta now in hospital in Van- couver, to find that in his absence Hon. W. A. Fallow, Alberta's Minister of Public liVorks, has gone to New York and Ottawa with Hon. Solon Low, Provincial Treasurer, to discuss the refunding of Alberta's public debt totalling $140,899,100 and other financial matters. After completing discussion in the American city, the Alberta representatives will go to Ottawa, ap- parently for discussions with Dominion officials regarding Alberta's financial standnng. The Edmonton Bulletin in a copyright newspage story said “The meetings in New York are described as of extreme importance and on their outcome, it is understood the whole future course of pro- vincial debt schemgs i: dipepdent." Rev. C. W. Demille, General Secretary of the Ontario Temperance Federation has been speak- ing his mind at the London Conference of the United Church. His first accusation was against the C.C.F.-S0cial- ists, then next against all political parties, and then his own cloth. Any political party in the word ‘rum’ in various ways." He did not elabor- ate or amplify, but let the pun go. As to the clergy themselves he again finds a too hesitant attitude. He put it this way: "If it were an- nounced at a meeting of the London Confer- ence that someone was going to come to speak for a half hour on temperance. there would be a sudden congestion at those doors at the back with people going out." “The London Confer- ence is an organization of ministers and laymen,” says the Montreal Gazette.
