While a gang of men were working in the varnish Loiling shop, two kettles of var- nish boiled over and exploded with a ter- rific detonation. The followed by the shrieks of those working in the shop, who were horribly burned by the overflowiog material. Four men were terribly burned, and one perhaps fatally. The names of the injured are Martia Mc- Mahon and son, manager Findlay and son, Joho Thurson ; the latter was al- most rosted alive. a ee ee ee A neighbor missed corn from his garner, and suspicions rested upon a reckless fellow whom everybody called Sam. The corn was kept in a chamber over the kitchen, adjoining the wood- honse, towards which the chamber wes left open and accessible by a ladder. The vietim of this midnight “theffery,” us another neighvor called it, determin- ing to satisfy himself concerning the identity of the thief, made a temporary bed upon the kitchen floor and lay down to watch. About the time when churehyards yawn, he was aroused by a noise overhead, when he suddenly called out at the top of his voice, ‘Sam?’ ‘Hallo ! responded the theif, entirely off his guard by the sudden call. ‘ Don’t take more than a bushel.’ ‘Then I _ shall have to pourit out, for I've got two in the bag already.’ The arrival of cotton spioners for the Dundas mil! is the beginning of the end, the prelude to the horrible disaster which the National Policy is about to inflict. Ove would have thought that it ‘was a healthy sign, an evidence ‘that there was beginniog to be something for people to do in this country, aud evea amid the wail of Grit lamentation one cannot help wondering what it is that induces these people to come, and also what it is that induces any one to encourage them to come. We heard of nothing of this kind a while ago. What sort of a change does it indicate, coming prosperity or further depression ?~-Hamilton Spectator Queen Victoria is a most courteous lady.
