s \ HASZARD’S GAZETTE, NOVEMBER 26. ‘ ...a iligin Atr sworn.’ I these st‘ Iiecouie tleuulntt-. and that agriculture has ceased; how quickly then would the town he depopulated. Im- agine now the reverse — ilie country flourishing, but the town burnt down. Even if we had not frequent ex- amples toteach us, comuion series would teach us that the same necessity this! first originated the uccu. rnulatioii ofimlividunls still continues; and accordingly we eeiitiiiually use that when calariiities like these afiil flourishing towns, the loss is immediately repaired. and almost invariably witlt greater splendor and Iiiagiiilicence. It is evident that it is for the con- venience of the adjoining and surrounding country that towns are built; and if our country people would when they come to town take a view of the whnrves, stores. and so forth, and consider them as erected for their convenience, in the same way as they do a mill or a blscksrnith's shop near tlieir'own lioines, it would go very far to do away with this feeling of jealousy which is too often indulged in. We began with talking about a Market house. Now for whose beiiefit is this species of building principally erected, or rather, who will reap the greatest advantages frotri it.’ — We will try and answer this question by asking another. Why is it that several of our merchants are putting new fronts to their shops, making the entrance to them easy, and atfording every facility for curitoiiicrs to inspect their goods? In order, of course, thatth may attract buyers and get rid oftlieir stock as quick- ly as possible. Now what is a iiisrket house but is shop? The only dilference is, that there are it hun- died, or two perhaps of shopkeepers. occupying the saute building. and live hundred or a thousand cus- tomers in the shop at one time, all hurry and bustle to get served. Ifthe shop be large and well laid out, properly ventilated, kept cool and airy in summer and warm and comfortable in winter. it will be the means of attractisg a greater number of the wealthier portion of the comtiiunity who would not otherwise think even of entering it. And who would benefit by their presence.’ Unqusstionsbly the sellars;—nn(I who are they? The inhabitants of the country,—tlie raiscie of the producers. Suppose also that every facility were provided for displaying the goods ex- posed for'sale to the greatest possible advantage,- tltnt the sellers of meat occupied one portion, the flour and meal merchants another, the vendors of poultry a third, of miscellaneous wares a fourth, and so on. Imagine too a place set apart for live stock , for carts or sleds laden with hay, wood. potatoes, dtc. Try and conceive—for to those used to the present rriarket house it will beaetreicli of iinsginatioii— that the avenues to this large shop are neat, clean and free from obstructions of all sorts,—so that every lady riiight couie with her cook iiisid or man servant and malts her market with perfect ease and comfort to herself, would not all this conrbine to facilitate and encourage trade among the public shopkeepers, at much as plate glass windows and easy entrances do the private ones? If it would, why should not that part of the public who are the sellers, and who will derive the greatest benefit, contribute to the ex- poses of the erection? This part of the subject will requires separate article, which we will ere long furnish. In the mean time. we request our country readers to talte what we have lisre written for their especial benefit into their serious consideration.
