Promptnesss in filling mail orders is a commendable virtue and always has a favorable reaction upon the acvertiser who employs it. The prompt filling of all orders is much more likely to bring a secoud order, than is any an- noying delay.— Our Silent Partner. Every dealer, whether he be a drug- gist or drys good merchant, will keep in his stock what the people want if he is a shrewd storekeeper. The thing for the manufacturer of any commodity to do is to make his consumers want his goods, by advertising. I believe in all kinds of advertising that will get or keep the people’s attention.—H. L. Kramer, Where Little Things Count. Bookkeeping has been reduced to such an exact science in the big metro- politan banks that the clerks are expect- ed to strike a correct ballance at the close of each day’s work no matter if the transactions have run into the millions of dollars. When the books fail to balance, the whole force of the bank is put to work to discover the error, and no clerk starts tor home un- til itis discovered, whether it amounts to two cents or $200. Generally a quarter of an hour will bring the mis- take to light, but sometimes the hunt is kept up until late into the night. Such a search was_ being conducted ina New York bank located in the vicinity of Wall street. Forty-five cents were missing. At six o'clock not a trace of the errant sum had been dis- covered. Dinner was sentin for the whole force from an adjoining restaur- ant, and after half an hours rest the search was againtaken up. Midnight came, but still no clew, so sandwiches and coffee were served. “Hello!” said aclerk. “The Bank National people are working to-night too. Guess they’re in the same box.” Sure enough, the windows of the bank across the street were brilliantly lighted. ‘The incident was soon tor— gotten when the wearying hunt after that elusive forty five cents was resum— ed. Shortly after one o’clock in the morning, as they were about to give up for the night, a loud rapping was heard at the front door of the bank. “Hello! Hello! What’s the matter ?” called the cashier through the key-hole. “Matter, you chumps. Why we've got your blamed forty-five cents ! Come along home to bed !” Outside stood the crowd of clerks from the neighboring bank. It appear- ed that, in making a cash transaction, one of the banks had paid the other forty-five cents too much. No one, it was con- tended, could give as good a value in goods and give premiums or stamps as weil, and no one can expect to get something for nothing. Their was either a loss to the dealer, or the customer paid for the stamps or pre- miums.
