' e DAHLIAS.--I have % lot of line Dahlias _ on show. Fancy actus, Decorative, d If . S Your Trade. . . . , they are going fast.-G. Herbert Haszard. I A FEW years ago the merchants of this! town agreed to close their places of busl- A ness at six ofclock in the evenings for six 'months--every alternatefthree mouths- out of the year. This in the quiet seasons gave the clerks-and “bosses” also-a chance to rest, or take in any enjoyment which might be offering after the day`s work. The plan worked successfully for a year or so until some of them stepped slightly over the mark and soon tha sys -` tem gave way to the most unsystematic rule which perhaps exists in any town. Now it seems that the clerks must wait until the last possible customer has arrived and has been waited on, before th ~ key in the door is turned. This means an /where from 7.30 to 10 o’clock, which is entirely too much to ask of any clerk. no matter what his wages might be. No man can afford to work in a store from 7 a.\n. until 9 or 10 p. m., and sometimes 11 p. m. week an and week out, as some of the clerks in Summerside have to do. Let a I clerk “knock of” at 6 or 7 p. m. and next morn- he will bein a much better condition todo his day’s work, and accomplish more than after a late evenlnpfs labor. When the six 0'clock system was in vogue the p -ople in town and country knew that they could not do any shopping after that hour.Is was everybody’s supper hour and all were anxious to get to their homes. The rule was easily kept and lt was generally un- derstood. There is no doubt but just a s much work was done and as much money exchanged hands under the early system as under_ the present inhuman way. There is only one argument used as against the early closing which calls for consideration and that is that farmers will per--ist in coming into town after their day’s work is done tomake purchases. We must consider the fact however that the farmer in his busiest season does not stop working until after dark and during this season he generallymakes it a point todo his town business before the late hours of the day. And this he will do when the six or 7 o'clock system is esta- blished and strictly adhered to. There should certainly be _ a regular hour for closing and everyone should lock his door at that hour. The least step in violation of the rule would meanits failure but it would be no trouble toadopt s system and keep it. p ____~€1-1.
