Following is a partial text of the Principal's address delivered by Dr. Frank MapKinnon at the Convo- cation of Prince of Wales College yesterday: I "It is my privilege to welcome to Convocation the parents and friends of the students of Prince oi Wales and to join with them in extending congratulations and cuwuiagement at the end of a successful year's work. Once more we bid farewell to s. graduating (class and wish them success in the future. "On behalf of all assembled I wish to extend a particular greet- ing to His Honour the Lieutenant Governor who, in performing for i the first time the traditional func- tions of official visitor to the Col- lege, becomes the twenty--fifth Governor of Prince Edward Island to act in this capacity. One of his predecessors, the Honourable liretus W. Young. was appointed Royal Visitor to the Central Acad- emy by King William the Fourth in 1834, and the history of the College since that time has fully justified the hopes expressed in the Royal Charter that the insti- tution should serve faithfully the cause of higher learning and the needs of the young people of this Province. "The session which ends today has been a very successful one and no of the faculty are proud of our association with the many fine young people with whom we have worked. The number of them who have done well is gratifying, par- ticularly in the senior years. If they follow the examples of their predecessors their careers in later life will do credit to themselves, ti-eir parents, and their instruct- ors. "Success in studies is, of course. only e. part of college education and many of our students have benefited enormously from thr: successful extra-curricular activit- ies which have been a feature of ithe year. Many of these activities lhave been carried on through. the leadership of the Students Coun- cll, the Athletic Association and the College Times, and I must record with pleasure our associat- ions with the student leaders of these bodies. "As usual some students have not done well. We ask them to persevere in overcoming their dir- ficulties and to come to us if there is any help we can give. They will be assured of every encouragement and cooperation. . Cultural Intereeia "Cultural interests have also been valuable to many students and we have noted several talent- ed musicians, debaters, and artists in our midst. I cannot mention all of them, but I must record the achievement of Miss Margaret El- lis of 0lLea.ry who won a Mari.- Lime-wide art contest, thus being the second student to bring this award to the College in two years. The splendid work of the Art De- Discusses iliducation And P.W.C. Year l "l ,i!Ac:a NINE partment well merits the provision. this year for the first time, of I. medal for proficiency in art do- nated by Henry Birks and sons. "It is a pleasure to record a new and successful innovation-the Prince of Wales College Concert Scrfes. The provision of good concert music and the encourage- ment of talented young Canadian artists have been important inter- ests of many colleges throughout the Dominion and Prince of Wales has accepted her share of this duty. Two Prince Edward Island artists and two promising young people, one from Sackville and one from Toronto, gave splendid per- formances which began the Series most ausplciously. It is hoped that the Series will be an annual feat- ure, and already a most promising group of distinguished young art- ists have been engaged for next season. "We were privileged to welcome distinguished scholars whose visits on important missions were most fruitful. Monseigneur Ferdinand Vandry,Rcctor of Laval University, delivered the second annual sam- uel Robertson Memorial Lecture. Professor Robert MacGrcgor Daw- son, one of Canada's leading schol- ars and literary figures, and Dr. Dudley Stamp. a geographer of world-wide renown, visited us on behalf of the Social Science Re- I search Council of Canada which has been doing much to promote scliolarsliip and cooperation among, the Dominion's educational insti-; tutions. Like our sister colleges, we' find the exchange of ideas result-i ing from such visits most helpful. ' Alumni Organized l "One of tlic highliglits of the? year has been the formation oi", the Alumni Association. Many old and faithful friends of the College! came together last autumn to form a society which will do much to, wcscrve the loyalties and friend-I ships of successive generations of, Prince of Wales students. and en-. ziblc the College to retain its in- tcrest in those who have spentj some time within its halls. The: response has been very gratifying so far, and we are proud to honor the Association by having its first president, His Lordship, the Chief Justice, as our Convocation speak- er-today. It is a greast pleasure for me to record our grateful thanks to the Association for do- nating two new prizes. one in each of the two final years. We are proud of our Alumni and we look forward to the future of their organization. t'The Principal's Convocation ad- dress in any institution inevitably records many successes. But it must never overlook the darker slda or give the impression of smug satisfaction with existins conditions. The field of education is always changing and any insti- tution is guilty of the highest folly if it fails to keep abreast of the newest developments. Moreover, it Continued on page 14 cer'se:?o11ire1rme'cn”y.ror'firesarou ,woii't want to miss an minute's funfin that Qprecious V3CaClOn-tl.lihei.yOtIF':Vl eamcd':l':3:.'so start out RIGHT!
