HOLMAN LIMITED CAHARLOTTETOWN BRANCH '15 lb bags, NB no 1' livestock SUMMARY Strikes in the major packing plants across Csnsds led to con- tinued unsettled live stock mar- kets. Local conditions governed supply and demand. which in turn determined prices. With the pos- sibility of the strike situation spreading to smaller lndepenent plants, selling agencies were ad- vising shippers to liquidate cau- tiously pending some improve- ment in the strike situation. Eastern Cattle Markets Declines of 25c to 50c were re- corded on s11 butcher cattle at Toronto where s run of 5100 _ head was on hand but about 700 were unsold at the close. Small butchers and packers had appear- ed to reach the limit of their cap- acity to slaughter and shippers were being advised to be cautious in their commitments. Some weighty steers sold at Toronto be- tween $12 and $14.50, end butch- er steers took a general $11 to $14. All supplies were fairly well cleared at Montreal, with small country plants taking a large share of the receipts, working to capa- city. The steers offered were only common to good in quality and the top of the market was $14.50, with medium grades $12.50 to $13, and good cows up to $11.50. In the Maritimes. no quotations were being issued for cattle due to the strike situation. Western Cattle Markets Prices were generally lower on cattle in the west during the week. despite the fairly moderate sup- plies, and buyers were staying away from any heavy purchases. Receipts, however. were fairly well cleared, with slaughter steers and heifers at Winnipeg selling fully 50c lower. Most of the steers rated $11 to $13.50. while the bet;- ter grades of cows sold at $10 to $10.50. Calgary paid $13 to $13.50 on a lower market for good steers; Edmonton up to $14; Prince A1- bert up to $12.50; Moose Jaw around $11 for some good heifers; Saskatoon up to $12 and $13 on good steers; Regina $13.50 to $14: ivhlle Vancouver had some good heifers at $12 to $13. Exports to United States Dairy cattle shipments to the United States in the past week totalled 1.378 head as against 1.240 in the corresponding week last. year. Shipments since Janu- ary 1st this year total 39.716 and in the same period last year amounted to 53,213.
