"In early 1951 Our Potato Com- mittee met with the Federal Cabl- net and fiequant contacts were kept up with the Finance Minister- We can look back now with great satisfaction on a Job that I feel was well done. and in this con- nection on behalf of the Council Committee I wish to express sin- cere thanks to all groups and in- dlvlduals who sup orted the Can- sdian Hortlcuitur Council in its efforts to secure this concession. Mr. Harris in his presentation in Parliament a few days ago made reference to the Council and its fine work and the presentation for attention to the potato case to the exclusion of all others." OF TREMENDOUS VALUE Regarding the results Mr. Shaw said: "We have secured our 37th cents tariff. We have had to give something in our quotas. but I do not consider this a serious mat- ter in view of our own expanding market and the fact that on seed we have not filled our quota dur- ing the past six years. Regarding early potatoes they are in a special category and even if a tariff were imposed it would not stop this importation. Further I have been assured that the strictest regulations will be preserved on this movement and there will be little opportunity of a leakage. ''In addition the southern grower who is primarily interested in this trade has been ou.r beat patron and support for seed, and has pos- sibly been of some assistance to our case In the general tariff im- position. POTATO CONFERENCE Mr. Shaw stated further th at his committee of Council h a ve finalized plans for an all-Canadian Potato Conference to take place at the Ontario Agricultural College Guelph, for four days August 19th to 22nd. This will follow the pattern set by United States authorities during the past few years and which pave been of great value to their industry. The conference program will cover production practises. ' . merchandising and marketing and the latest infor- mation on the whole industry. It is expected that top men from Canada and the United States will participate and that a large at- tendance from all parts of Canada will be attracted. A full report of this program will shortly be available- Mr. Shaw also conferred while in Ottawa with representatives from New Brunswick who were applying for an assistance for their growers of .75 cents per bushel as at June 15th. In view of the fact that federal authorities feel that such a policy should cover all of Canada. a project of this kind presents many difficulties. It is just possible that s starch program may he considered in- stead. Mr. Shaw expects to present a full statement on the tariff issue and other phases of extension at a meeting of the Potato Producers Association to be held in the Clo- vcr Club.
