tN — amend ———— oe AILY EXAMINER, JANUARY 1, 1883. ~- — . ~~ — OCavendish—His Confession. acetate cece eel a a { The Alleged Murderer of Lord ' | A man who went by the name of Patrick O'Reilly, has confessed at Rochester, N-Y., on Jan. LOth to being one of the participa. | tors in the murder of Lord Frederick Cavendish and Under Secretary Bourke in ? Dublin last May. He confessed as Hugh | O'Donnell, at Holly, Orleans County, and is now in gaol ut Albion. O’Donnell in his confession says: ‘‘ I landed in New York, May 22, 1882, from steamer ‘‘Califor nia,” and stopped fora time at 317 East Sixteenth street. I came here from Gias gow, Scotlana, and registered on board ship as Patrick McDonald. Peter Turney and Tunis McDonald were two of the three rties who helped me in the murder of Rourke and Cavendish, in Phoenix Park, near Mansion House, Dublin. We were in a cab, and there were four of us. I do not know who the fourth man was. There were twelve men stationed in the Park to assist us in case we needed help. We were drawn by lot from a Fenian organization in Dublin, in rear of Partrion street. The deed was done with daggers, and done very quickly, Lord Cavendish was struck first. Burke turned and said, ‘Oh you villains. Burke wore white gloves, but Cavendish wore no gloves. We all get back into the cab. drove back to the streets where we al! separated and went each by himself. I saw two wen mentioned as being with mein New York. We followed Burke and Cavendish down from the office to near the Mansion Honse. Cavendish was ahead of Burke when we overtook him. The Lieutenant at the Gate said as we passed out, ‘‘ You used those men pretty rough.” My age will be 28 on April 19. In 1870 I shipped from Liverpool by stmr. “England” of the National !ince, for New York; was work- ing in Chicago and Philadelphia till the fall of 1876, when I shipped by steamer “Egypt” from New York city; from Liverpool I went to Derry in_ the north of Ireland and remained there about two and a half years; from there - went to Temple Moor, Tipperary Co., where I stayed until the time of the assassination. I had work on the new chapel built by the priest. Nosbitt was architect. I was in Dublin about three days before we were drawn. I made the above statements to J. B. Fuller, Justice of Peace; this 17th day of Nov., 1882.” O'Donnell worked some time in the uarries at Holly under the name of Patrick O’Rielly. He stuck to the above oot until he began to realize the likeli- ‘hood of its leading him to the gallows, and then he denied, claiming entire ignorance of everything, even of the confession, and saying he wasa lunatic. Lately, however, he showed his knowledge of it by emphati- cally denying it toa Ragontet before the matter was mentioned to him. The fate of Cammander Maxwell Heron shows that the British authorities will nct tolerate the slightest departure from the strictest integrity on the part of those who are employed in any branch of the public service. Commander Heron was in command of the naval reserve ship ‘‘ Clyde,” stationed at Aberdeen. He was ccoused of having sold some of the ship's stores and of apply- ing the proceeds of the sale to his own use. A second charge was that he had em- ployed some of the seamen for private pur- . sof hisown. And a third was that he d endeavoured to elude enquiry into his conduct by @ false report. There were a number of minor charges, fourteen in num- ber. He was tried by court-martial, and the charges except two proved to the satis- faction of the court. is sentence was dismissed from the service. Although the sentence of the court was utter ruin to the man some of the English papers complain that it was not sufficiently severe. — Patrick Maloney, formerly of Ottawa, Ont., was murdered by a German naimed Drewers at Rat Portage, in a quarrel over a drink of water. The murderer broke his victim’s skull in with a terrible blow of an axe. The tragedy is attributed to illicit whiskey. The Great French Remedy, Dn LeDuoc’s Pericdica!
