The public announcement was that Mr. Davin would deliver a. lecture on “The British House of Commons as I knew it," but all agree that the lec. ture. though in itself a splendid success, was rather an incident of the visit. The “Bard of Regina" and Mrs. Davin were met at the station on Thursday morn- ing by a number of students. Mrs. Davin staid at the Royal Hotel, but he accompanied the students to the college building and attended Dr. Kierstead’s class in English literature. After list- ening for afew minutes to the discus- sion on one of Browning’s poems which was before the class, he consented to give us a few of his ideas about English literature. . No summary of his address would do him justice. He had occasion to quote from or refer to all the lehding authors of poetry and prose, and he showed a familiarity which was a source of won - * fr* der to those of us who had only thought of him as a leading politician; and he was as much surprised as the rest of us when the college bell stopped him at t The next hour he visited Dr. Saw- ¥0'°‘9'0‘9'0*9'*3>°"9*°9°'9*§ .the end of the hour. He described the House as he looked down upon it for live years from the reporter’s gallery; dealing particularly with the four men -who during that period were the lions _of the day: Lowe, Disraeli, Bright and Glad- stone. His gestures, and eloquence, and Irish wit, all combined to give him an extraordinary power represent ng the scenes amidst which live of the teit years of his life were spent, and the audience gave expressions of approval by repealed rounds of applause. A number of us heard Sir Louis Davies’ lecture on the same subject in College Hall three years ago, and have not vet forgotten how be kept the closest attention of the whole audience l1o_rn the beginning to the end of his ex- cellent address, but when we think of the burst of eloquence with which Mr. Davin eulogized the motherland and Canada. in his peroration. it is no dis- credit to Sir Louis to say that for wealth of imagery and force it was a more masterly address; yet there were periods when we wondered if Mr.Davin’s rr cert tive hour speech at Ottawa might not have had some prosy portions. / 1 ( E-fl’ fs, t it sin tins Inns is lnetileiiltii A_t the largest bicycle show held in the U.S, the other day with 217 entries, the highest price chain wheel shown was $00.00. , I f you pay more than $50-00 for a 1899 chain road wheel, youll pay _more _than you_ need. _ Our line this year vtill range from $30.00 to 50.00 for chain wheels, $7 o 00 for the chainless.
