One of the most sensible and business- like assemblages that have been reported recently was that of coal operators and miners at Columbus, Ohio, a few days ago. There were present on the part of the oper- ators the following: For Ohio, 82; Illinois, West ee Indiana, 25; Pennsylvania, 20; Virginia, 1; total operators, 159. On the part the miners : Ohio, 21; Illinois, 15; Indiana, Pennsyivania, 8; West Vir- ginia, 1; total for miners, 60. The object of the meeting was to devise some plan of operation whereby peace and good will might be established and maint: ained among the persons interested in getting out coal. It was agreed that on May 1, 1887, the price of mining shall be ad- vanced 10 cents per ton over the scale of rates of 1886 and 1887, and that such ad- vauced rates shall be the minimum rates from May, 1887, to May, 1888. Should the market price of coal advance over the rates . vailing in the different markets in May, 1887, for the first 25 cents of such ad- vance the miners shall receive 5 cents of it, and above that the miner shall receive one-third of the advance. <A scale of wages was agreed upon, based on the present price of coal. The seale will be maintained, and the miner will get part of any advance that goes as high as 25 cents. That ar- rans vement is honorable to all parties con- cerned, and it is well worth studying by all uneasy persons who are in trouble similar to that from which the Columbus people have so wisely emerged. ——_—+ — Julius Cohn, of Atlanta, thinks that he has the oldest flute in America.
