For- ther and more s.uthontic_information may be looked for by the next mail from Halifax. We 1‘ h t hfrom Willmer's “pa. or Pu‘ jeldt, but the uy d in it. ' Times on the su about the Government takin a an The seal Fishery in New oundland had been on the whole successful. Four hundred vessels had been fitted out from the various ports. We notice that several vessels owned in this Is- land were ros rous. Mr. Sutherland's vessel had taken g00t.lwand Messrs. Gillis and Sander- son’s were well fished. The finest vessels are reported to have had the smallest catch, from 3;ei‘ii.llilaving sailed away from the vicinity of e . RUSSIA AND TURKEY. Through the medium of the Telegraph, we are in possession of news from Constantinople to the 9a of the present month. mm the itiformation thus received, we are informed that the Russian envoy, Prince Meoschikofi‘. liss at length broken the ominous silence he had long observed. and has submitted to the Ports the following demands on behalf of his master. the Russian Caar:— , Ist. Respecting the Holy Places, he requires the repeal ofthe concessions in favor ofthe Roman Catholic Church, made some time since to M. Ls- vsletie, the representative of the French Govern- ment at Constantinople. 9d He demands the conclusion of an ofi'ensive and defensive ttesty, acceding to Rttssia the right, at any time, to enter the Dartlanelles for the de- fence of her ally. 3d. He demands the abandonment of certain tracts of territory in Georgia. 4th. lie demands t‘or Russia the suaeraioty of Montenegro, and that the independence of that petty state shall he recognized by the Ports. 5th. He demands independence of the Orien- tal t:liri<tisns in all matters relating to their creed. tlili. He insists upon the eventual military occu- paticn of the Danubiiin provinces, for the purpose of repressing the revolutionary spirit which is al- leged to prevail in them. This news is important, as showing that Rus- sia does not longer deem it it r to conceal her design of profitingby the wee ness of her Turkish neighbour. e have been lately told that the mission of Prince Menschikof to Con- stantinople was sim ly to maintain the interests and dignity of the reek Church, as represented by tho Csar, against those of the Roman Catho- lic Church, as represented by the Emperor of the French. w discover, however, that the claims and interests of the Greek Church are dis of in a single paragra hof Prince Menschi ofi"s demands upon the orte ; and that although they figure first upon the list, they are, in fact, totally subordinate and infinitely inferior in point of interest and importance to the demands which follow. Amon t those demands . are included the concession of a right to Russia to enter the Dardanelies at any period that she may please ; and, at the same time, a right to occupy the Danubian provinces with her armies! We are almost tempted to believe, that the tslegra h must have made some error in the transmission of this intelligence, and that the demands actually. made by Russia are not so extravagant as they are here represented to be. At an rate, our own bassador is by this time at his post at Constantinople, and he will know how to do his duty. It is impossible that either England or France can consent to such conditions as the Russian Envoy demands. FR A N C E . The main features of this scheme are the granting power to the municipal councils of towns to vote a rate in aid of voluntary education, that schools so aided shall be placed under Government regulation, and that parents shall have the power of withdrawing their children from is form of religions instruction to which they object. To this is lacked a propo- sal to oversee the management of charitable trusts, and to compel the Universities to reform sortie of air more glaring abuses. After some discussion, leave was given to bring in‘ the bill. We regret to notice an extract from a letter, written a few days since, by '1‘. acaulsy, in which he says : " The state of my health is such that I shall probably be under the necessity of passing the next winter in a milder climate.” The steamer Great Britain came up the river Mersey at four o'clock on the after noon of Satur- day, the 2d inst.. and met the America of the port on her way to Halifax.
