The column fell back to Yong Song, 8o that the rest of the trip might be made by stream. Sey. mour then said : “Prior to our departure from Tang Fang, I ordered two trains to stop there in order to enable part of our men to pro- ceed later, but these trains were attacked after my departure by the Boxers and the Chinese troops tbat had come from Pekin, and fighting ensued, io the course of which 400 or 500 were killed on the enemies’ side. Six of our men were killed and 48 wounded. ‘At Young SongI was joined by the men who came tnere in three trains. The waut of provisions together with the presence of numerous wounded soldiers, compelled usto retreat to Tien Tein. Communication with Tien Tsin remained entirely suspended for six days and ac- cordingly we were deprived of the means ot obtaining sapplies. “We accordingly marched back, though coustantly attacked by the enemy, along the river @scortiog wi duc yxure time the wounded evuldiers carried in voais.” Afic r detailing the capture of the foris and supplies, Admiral Seymour then ad- ded that the ammunition and food would bave kept the relief column in condition tor several days, but owing to the presence of 20 many wounded 1, was decided to rex turn to Tien Tein.
