I I uniierfur had begun to turn brown even on the good pelts. Oi-llefwi-‘ifl the general quality wu superior to previous collections. The BTBBW-St» disappointment iii the pelts was the large number o! improperly Iiandled ones. Said he, "It is sur- prising that. ranchers would work hard all year, taking the necessary precautions to safeguard their fut- ure production and in the last few minutes in which they could com- plete their success, neglect it en- tirely by turning out a badly stretched pelt full of grease. "To go to the other extreme, some ranchers had used carbon- tetrachioride t0 NITIOVB the grease. In some cases this method is suc- cessful but the treatment usually renders the pelt unfit for show purposes. This chemical removes the natural oils from the fur as well as the excess grease. It is well to understand that the natural oils in the fur are greatly responsible for the beautiful lustre or sheen that is characteristic of good mlnks —i~emoval of these oils causes the fur to become dull and lifeless. Many of the pelts examined were poor quality although carefully handled during pelttng. In these cases I would advise a complete change in brecdln stock. Good market pelts constitute the only proof of breeding stcck." Continuing Mr. Roscnthau slates: "A raiichcr caine into our fur de- partment and asked that we rccoin- mend his breeding stock. I asked to sce some of his pelts and found he did not have one worioi ten dollars in the whole lot. My advice to him was to pelt all his breeders then go out and purchase some good stock frcm a reliable rancher if he wanted to remain in the mink business." Mr. Rosenthauls remarks re mink arc quite applicable to silver fox. We know from personal experience and from examining the pelts of others, that we have often liad a tendency to over-drum our pelts; This takes out the natural oil and after a short, time the pelts have a dry, lustreless Ilppciirance. Drum- ming should not be continued any longer than necessary to remove the excess grease and extraneous matter from a pelt. Then there is a reserve of natural oil to give the pelt a sparkle and sheen when nrook out and examined frcqti-cntly its. they are on the auctions and later.
