I desire to make special mention of the many kind and unmerited letters, too complimentary, wh'ch have come to me through the mail. I would fain write you all a personal letter, but time fails me. Since my ar- rival in Charlottetown, Tuesday, June the 4th, I have made an almost complete itin- erary of this beautiful and fruitful Island, justly dubbed the garden of the Dominion ` of Canada. God bless my native Isle! The generation whose brow was adorn- ed with “silver threads among the gold,” when I left P.F.I. forty-two years ago, are gone. My youthful friends and school companions are now among the old and gray, and many of them gone. The third generation, whom I never saw till this srmrner, born since I left, and of course heretofore unknown to me, have iilled me wlth the greatest interest and admiration They have come up sple _ididly and are the princes and prin:esses royal of this princely Island,|this gem of the sea, this f"Garden of the G ><`s' The young men are stalwzifs, and the maidens are queens of beauty and culture, and all of them both the men and women are knights of in- dustry. I am truly deeply in love with them. I would be blind, indeed, if I fail- ed to see their charms, I and callous, ill- deed if mylheart and brain didi not re~- spond thereto. The homesteads everywhere are quite to my taste; and the vast improvements in home-building, road-making, in school- houses and in church edifices are marked since forty years ago. The march of in- provement has gone steadily on. The dairy industry is immense, and the farms ard methods of farming are up-to-date. Charlottetown affords many evidences of the advance movement, her stores, her school-houses, her churches and her col- leges, her public buildings, her streets,her lovely Victoria Park, her hotels, all bear witness of commendable progress. Rail ' roads ramify the country and steamships keep her in touch with the outside world. Her newspapers are progressive, clean and well edited. Her industries in additionfto agriculture are extensive, profitable and varied. Prominent among these are the lobster. butter, cheese and meat-packing indust- _ ries. Here ministers, lawyers, teachers, _ politicians and statesmen stand in the front rank, and will more than favorably compare with their coajutors _in the other parts ofthe Dominion and in the great Republic to the south. And 1 am glad to _ say that many of the noble and brilliant sans and daughters of this Island emcient- ly flll the very highest positions of honor and emolument both in Canada and in the I-gi~eatUnited States, in the industries, in commerce, in the professions bothli-i church and state. Virtue and brains are 'oound to have their reward, as surely as water is bound to rise to its level. e I would note here, thatlone of the great- _,est coming industries of P. E. I. is cran- byrry growing, one of the most profitable in the U. S. may be made so here also. I know, if the cranberry industry were poor men 5 but now are rolling in wealth.
