The poor girl was too frightened to scream. and tr -milling went to a cupboard contain- ing $.‘ll), which sum she handed to the intruders. She was then commanded to “go upstairs and get the rest," the men stating they knew her father and brother were not. at home and she was alone. The girl then went upstairs and while pretending to search quietly unlocked the door of the peddl-r’s chamber and whispered to him that there were thieves downstairs. ,Pro- curing a loaded revolver from his pack, he give the girl some money ir- bills, and told her to go down and hand it to the intruders. She did so, and as one of them was _reaching out for it, the peddler fired. wounding the fellow in the shoulder. His companion, who waslbehind, was also flied at, and wounded in the leg. With oaths both turned out and lid. The fellow who had been given the thirty dollar.- at first groppetl it the moment he was shot.
