Literary Notes. “ Quariz,” the nom de plume so th konowing one says, of T. CU, Patterson, formerly proprietor of the Mat/, in a letter the other day to that newspaper handles the Karl of Desart, and his new book, the “Children of Nature,” just published by Rose-Belford Publishing Company, pretty severely. He says “ Lord Desart’s new book is quite improper enough to insure its belog read,”’ and “our girls are not of that sort, and I chucked his Lordship’s prurient trash into the St Lawrence, glad we had the means to wash at least oue copy of its un- hallowed im purities.” The heroine of the story is supposed to be a Canadian by birth, so we judge this is sufficient reason for raising the indignation of the well- known fifth rib stabber. The enterprise of J. B. Magurn, sub- scription book publisher, Toronto, de- serves the thanks of all reading Canadians for bringing out such a reasonable priced elition ot Stanley’s “ Across the Dark Continent.” It is encouraging to note that books pregnant with thonght are having such large sales in Canada. Itspeaks well for the intelligence of our people. We un- derstand that the Rose-Belford Publish- ing Co, have issued a second edition of “« A modern Symposium,”’ the first edition having been exhausted within three months. The same publishers have just issued Greg’s *‘ Creed of Christendom,’ and it is worthy of notice that the first edition of 2,500 copies, before it was oi! the press, were ordered. The complete index which this edition contains, and the grest- ly reduced price, makes it preferable to any other edition, which are all high priced and minus the index, Advance orders for six thousand copies of Wilkie Collins’ new novel, ‘“ The Haunted Hotel,’ have been received by the Canadian publishers, Rose Belford Publishing Co’y. Those who read the story is it progressed in Rose-Belford Canadian Monthly pronounce it equal to his “ Woman in White.” here isa rumor that a Canadian edition of the Marquis of Lorne’s work will be prioted here. The Rose Belford Canadian Monthly since the amalgamation, is rapidly grow- ing in circulation and favour, The report of the Copyright Commis- sion, so far as it would effect Canada, if wade law, would, undoubtedly, prove a great boon to Canadian Publishers. Since Goldwin <“mith’s returo to Cunads, we can boast of having one of the best writers of the Knglish language in the world. It is hoped he will contribute often to our magazines and newspapers. There never was a better opportunity than now to find patient readers of liberal doctrines. It is pleasant as well as surprising to observe the rapid strides that publishing has made in Canada in the past few years. Another instance of this welcome enter- rise is the announcement just made by the Rose-Belford Publishing Co., of their inteptien to issue a Canadian edition of Mrs. Annie Brassey’s now famous book, “The Vovage in the Sunbeam.” It is very handsomely illustrated, and it has been extoled as being as near perfect as any book could be, both literary and me. ehanically, by such first class magazines and newspapers as Nineteenth Century, The Contemporary Review, The Satur- day Review, The Academy, aud in fact by every periodical of any prominence in England and America. = POSTPONED ! rYWE GRAND LOTTERY of a MASON & HAMLIN ORGAN, advertised to take oat on the 27th inst., is postponed till the Sth September. ; MOHN McEACHERN, } (, S. There never has been a time when the heal- ing of so many different diseases has deen caused by outward application as the present. It is an undisyuted fact that over half of the entire population of the globe resort to the use of ordinary plasters. Dr. MELVIN’s CApstcuM PorRovS PLASTERS are acknowledged by all who have used them, to act quicker than any other plaster they ever before tried, and that one of these plasters will do more real service than a hundred of the ordinary kind. All other plasiers are siow of action, and require to be worn continually to effect a cure; but with these it is entirely dif- ferent: the instant one is applied the patient will feel its effect. Physicians in all ages have thoroughly tested and well know the effect of Capsicum; and it has always been more or less used as a medical agent for an outward application; but it is only of very recent date that its advan- tages in a porous plaster have been discovered. Being, however, convinced of the wonderful cures effected by Dr. MELVIN’s CAPSICUM Porous PLASTrERS, and their superiority over all other plasters, they now actually preseribo them, in their practice, for such diseases as rheumatism, pain in the side and back, and all such cases as have required the use of plasters orliniment. After you have tried other plas- ters and liniments, and they have failed, and you wanta certain cure, ask your druggist for Dr. MELVIN’s CAPSICUM POROUS PLASTER, You can hardly belieye your own convictions of its wonderful effects. Although powerful and quick in its action, you can rely on its safety for the most delicate person to wear, as it is free from lead and other poisonous material commonly used in the manufacture ef ordin- ary plasters. One trial is a sufficient guarantee of its merits, and one plaster will ¢9li hundreds to your friends, Ask your druggist for DR. MELYIN’s CAPSI- cum Porous PLASTER, and take no Other; or, on receipt of 25 cents for one, $1 for five, or $2 for a dozen, they will be mailed, post paid, to any address in the United States or Canadas, MANUFACTURED BY THE NOVELTY PLASTER WORKS Lowell, Mass., U.S. A., G.
