IIELIGION AND LIFE By Very Kev. George C. Pldgeon. D.D.. LLB first Moderator of the United Church of Canada (Copyright) In the life of the spirit is thel joy of conversion. - We remember vividly the depth. and height 01 the happiness that took possession of the soul when the love of Christ first became I personal experience. I 0ne's entire nature was sholl through with a brightness above that of the sun, and it seemed as if all nature rejoiced with us. Prayer was a delight, Bible-read- ing an inspiration as it every line were written for us personally, and the worship of the sanctuary a foretaste of the songs of the' redeemed in glory. But after a short time the radiance faded: the use of thc means of grace became dull and difficult: and service became a drudgery. This went on until one began to wonder if those first experiences had a real founda- tion after all. But still there faced us the facts that strength for the present and hope for the future were found only in God. and there was nothing for it but to set one's will to struggle through the period of difficulty to the light beyond. In due time the clouds rolledl STRENGTH FOR THE PRESENT IIDPE FOR FUTURE IN GOD One of the moat difficult stages personal experience. He was dealing with the King-, reaction which follows the firstv.dom's gradual growth, ”first thel blade, then the ear, and then the full grain in the ear." and he. applied it to the growth of re gion in the soul- . It was evident that he too had been through the experience of the joy of conversion and the re- action that followed. it was also. clear that he had been deeply dis-1 tressed by the reaction and hadl been driven to question the real- ity behind those early ecstasies which answer to the dawning of God's love on the soul. However, he worked his way through the gloom. and this is how he illustrates the soul's "growth to grace" The joy of conversion is like the blossoms in the spring, bright and beautiful, fragrant. and commanding the admiration of all who see themi REAL ADVANCE The blossom stage is followed, however. by the sour fruit stage, in which there is no beauty. and no fragrance. in which the acid predominates, while no one pays any attention to it. But the sour fruit stage is a real advance on the blossom stage, and it must be KEDGEMAKOOGE.
