£0 38 THE BRITISH AMERICAN 299 9 [ML Pepper] thought it wasnothing methanjustice to vote 1001: of it to our eneral Solicitor, as he certainly thought 9 had some claims on the hberahty of this I ightened club. . My, Plutus was really astonished at the l.«uments advanced by_the last speaker. ' hear) Was he not aware that the inns, representative he alludes .to, was filed in the disrharge of his_duties 'by a lieutenant Governor, Secretaries, &0. SLC. Treasurer does all the duties {his office without even theqssistanee of clerk, except when the Master of the rolls dm bis powerful assistance : and what 500], the present day to what it was fifty ms ago, when every necessary and luau- 'oflife could be obtained for halfits pre- pt cost, although J. L. L. says there was 0 corn then ; with respect to his remarks bout the General Solicitor’s claim for a arr, he thought it was nothing more or lsst'han an insult to this club : (hear,) it as notorious that he opposed them in eve- -moasure that was in any way calcula- ,] to advance their own interest. Mr, Justice Bee would support the mo- ons under debate, and as to the General nlicitor’s claim, he differed from the hon. entlcman who had just sat down : he did at think that his Opposition to their mea- res should be any consideration why he ould not be allowed something. He ok it quite in another light, for he was nrinced in his own mind, that he [the eneral Solicitor] injured the‘ character of eclub, by vilifying it out of doors, more an the loss of IOOI. a year were to their sources. He thought it was the only ef- ctual way of stopping his mouth ; and if appeared that the supply granted this or would exceed their funds, it was ve- 'easy to make symbolic money to meet edeticicnry: it was his intention to move tsome future time for leave to introduce resolution to make all symbolic money a gal tender; [bear, bear,] but if we voted urGeneral Solicitor a salary, he thought ere was no danger of his refusing any de- ription of money. Sir. Bumble Bee thought the salary pro- sed for the Treasurer too large, as it ap- arcd by averaging the salary ofhis pre- essors for the last twenty years, it did tamount to half the sum ; but as he wthere was a majorityin favor of the otion, no doubt for good reasons of their n, he would not oppose it ; as to voting salary to the General Solicitor. he widely tiered from his honorable and learned col- ague. He would never consent to vote in a shilling, as he could not see what eater claim he had on this club than any rson who had previously filled the situa- n. The Captain would oppose the motion the utmost of his abilities. He asked uld honorable members call to recollec- II the time when our Treasurer held a n high situation in this Colony, and resigned it the very day before his services were most required, because he was disappoint- ed in a promise that had been made him of the situation he now holds, when it was not worth halfthe proposed amount. He could aSsure the members of this club that he spoke from disinterested motives, as he had no claim for any share ofthis gentle- man’s patronage, when be distributed a- mong his friends ; he thought the situation should be given to the person who would do the duties on the cheapest terms. He would therefore more as an amendment that the President be directed to advertise for tenders to that effect, to be given in on or before the first day of May next. The a-' mendment not being seconded, the question was not put. ' . I ., Mr. \Veathercock admired such indepen- dence ina public character, as to resign his situation under such circumstances ; he did intend to vote against the motion, but for that reason alone he would support it, , even if the sum proposed had been twice ,as large. (Cries of Question, quest'on, frOm all parts of the room. , " r f it“ Mr. Rusticus then obtaindil/idhp‘a/r‘iw said, from the selfish and narrow-minded arguments that had fallen from members that night, he was induced to think there had been some private acting behind the scenes. He never had reason to doubt the honor and integrity of our Treasurer ei- ther in a public or private capacity: and be trusted for the honor ofhimselfand of this club, he would never appoint a deputy from among them under the authority in- vested in him, if he did, it would speak vol- umes. This club should be like Ceasar‘s wife, “above suspicion.” He would there- fore call on members whq had expressed themselves in favor of this motion, if they had any sense of honor or ofjnstice left ; to retract their opinions and vote against the motion : iftbey did not, he hoped the press would do its duty. Prince Bob arrived at the moment the question was put from the chair, having being detained by bad roads, Ile imme- diately inquired how the President voted, and as a matter of course voted with him. —On the division there appeared for the motion 13, against it 4. So the motion was carried. It was then moved by Mr. Bumble Bee and agreed to, that the Committee be sup- plied with two gallons of Brenan 8L Co’s. whiskey. The chairman immediately wrote an order and despatched the messenger, who shortly returned, bringing two pounds of snuff, having delivered one given by the Major in mistake, in consequence of.not being able to read. The Major very hbe- rally handed his snuff about until the mes- senger again returned an eported, that the clerk would not let tti an it with- out their sergeant’s security, which being given, the stuff was soon introduced with hot water, sugar and tumblers, ofthe tem- perance society size ; and after each mem- ber taking nine rounds, 'it appeared that the first rule of the club was likely to be infringed, the Chairman reported progress and asked leave to sit again. s t On motion of lVIr. Flumme y. the Club adjourned to Tuesday the 23rd inst. For the British flmerican. GO WINTER—COME SPRING. Old man, old man, hie thee away, Get along, get along, why do you stay? Why, why grieve us?
