Not bought or sold, But far beyond the gleaming gold. lf he were but to feel at length This languor, binding as a chain, His prayer would be, O, grant me strength, And lowly lot and toil again; For like a pall, his weakness over-shadows all, God gives a portion unto each; ! will not lift up feeble hands, As though my Father I would teach, To fetter me with lighter hands, He cares forall, Who heedeth ev’ry sparrow’s fall. Now summer's breath, the scent of flowers, Creeps softly in and breathes to me, A message from celestial bowers That wakes my heart in harmony, This hfe is sweet, \V hen mortals banish vain regret. - *_-—o- + Day and Night in Egypt The airis simply perfect—bracing, and yet not cold, except in the early morning. It isa delightful experience, altogether, and we all enjoy it thorough- ly. Ithink Ilike the early morning best, for 1 generally wake about haif- past four, and, just drawing back the curtains of my window, enjoy a gorgeous Vision of an castera night, quite different from anything we ever see in our cold northern clime. Great asin the con- trast between the English and Egyptian winter, in the heat of the the sun and cloudlessness of the sky during the day, | think the nights are even more remarkable. The atmosphere is so clear that each star of any magnitude seems almost like a moon, and casts its independent track upon the water ; while as to the moon herself, how can one describe the beauty of that pale, golden sphere, which hangs suspended like a huge globe from the deep azure vault ot Heaven, shedding so strong a light that it is easy to read by it. To- ward six o'clock the stars begin to pale and even the moon to lose some of her eflulgence hefore the bright light of the coming dawn, which, in its turn has to give way to the rising sun, the earliest rays of which gild the mountain tops, and throw a roseate tint over the desert wasts of sand stretching into the far distance and over the fields of dazzl ing green nearer at hand. Soon the whole landseape is flooded with life and light, ‘and and&ther bright, cloudless Egyptian day has begun. But, if the suprises are beautiful, what she!l I say of the sunsets! About the one there is almost an air of chillness—a hope and promise of what is to come, mingled with a feeling of responsibility, and a sort of half dread of what the day may ossibly bring forth. About the other there is a sense of fulfillment and re- pose, before night comes and throws her mantie over the world,—Lady Brassey in Good Words. : — +<<—me- Some English Statesmen.
