A woman who marries is entitled to be kept in the tame rank and comfort in which she was reared.” We entirely disavt w these doctrines. It should he the aim of every married couple to make their own fortune. No son and daughter who become man and wife, are entitled to rely on their patriiiioiiy, but should willingly commence life at it lower step in the social lad- der than that occupied by their parents, so that they may have the merit and happiness of rising, if possible, to the top. Imagine the case of an aged couple, who by great perseverance acquired posses- sion of iriinieiise wealth, and are livin in a style nfeauo and splen- dour which is no morc tliiin the rewar of their longlife of industry. Will an body say. that the children of such " old folk" should live in tie same grandeur as their parents: The idea is preposte- rous. They have no right to such luxury, they have done notliiiig to deserve it, rind if their arents are lioneet in dividing their proper- ty among them, they can love no means of suppozitng it. Yet mar- riages are contracted on the principle, that the riiiiriied couple shall be able to keep u the rank to which they have been accustomed under the paterna roof. It is such notions as this—engendcrcd l Malthusiaa philosophers, and fostered by lazy pritle—tliat are filling our country with " poor old maids," with coquettish young ladies with nice, cigar-smoking, good-for-nothing young men.-.’\”ortIt Eritirlt Mail. Sirow A1‘ New Oiu.s:arrs.—'I‘he good people of New Orleans were visited on the l8th December with the rare novelty ofa fall of snow. which is thus noted in the Picayune ofthat city: We actually had a light full of snow yesterday afternoon about a quarter to four o'clock. It was like u dreani—alinost as quickly gone as come; but it served nsa topic for wonder and cliit-chat throughout the city. Some of the children down town, black and white. who had never before seen the article, were frightened half out of their wits by its appearance. THE GREAT POLAR OCEAN. At the last meeting of the Geographical Society, Lieut. Osborne, a member ofone of the British Arctic expeditions, argued, at some length in favour of the eu port of the existence of it great Polar Ocean. Ile said that in Vellington channel, he had observed im- menee numbers of whales running out from under the ice, ti proof that they had been to water and come to water. lle further said that there were almost constant flights of ducks and geese, from the northward, another proof of water in thutdirection, since these birds found their food only in such water. He added it was his de- liberate opinion, from observations made on the spot, that whales passed a Wellington Channel into a northern sea. In referiince to the abu ance ofsnimal life, in the latitude oftliis sup red Polar Sea, he remarked that while, on the southern side 0 Lancaster Sound, he never saw giime enough to keep his dog, Melville Island, red and lilty miles to the northward, nbounded in deer and It was thus clear, he continued that animal life did rid on latitude, but increased, ifan thin . after passing the seventieih degree. Moreover, while in Be n's ay. the tide made for the southward, coming from the Atlantic, in Bari-ow's Straits it made for the northward, which could only be explained on the hypo- thesis ofu sea in that direction. All this seems to its proof of it great Polar Ocean. A German paper speaks of a plan which we have not seen else- where announced, of a house which is about to be built in England for the benefit of persons sutferin under complaints of the lungs. Mr. Peston, the architect of the Crystal Palace, it states, has form- ed the following Ian: A Is e s cc of ground is to be covered af- ter the manner 0 the Crysta Pa ace in which a temperature is to be snhiritnined by artificial means, similar to that of“ " " ‘ , such as Nice, Madeira, Egypt and the like. In this space Southem plants will be placed, and the illus¥on be kept up by iirtiliciel means, perspective, &e. The great open port will fnrnisli walks, places of uinlsnment, haths, reitdiiig rooms, and similar establishments, which will be connected with small chambers, in which the aunt mpcr- aturs will be kept up.
