OCTOBER 2, lill. THB LIQUOR TRAFFIC IN SOURIS. 3-.; There have been connioting reports as to the extent of illegal liquor selling and its resultant evils in Souris, about which we have published a number of letters and have still others on hand. Local eorres- pondence unfortunately is sometimes attended by recrimination, the imputation °f “lW°l'°by motives, accusations and denials. What the general reading public desire to know is the real state of the case told Without bias or personal feeling. In- stead th erefore of publishing further letters on the subject from residents of Souris, we quote the facts which have come under the observation ef a gentleman widely and favorably known throughout the Island, but who has no connection whatever with the local situation in Souris, and resides far from that town. Onr informant makes the following statements which he assures us may be relied upon: That last Saturday evening three toughs attai ksd a citizen of Souris and blackened his eyes. That on Monday noon last eigh- teen or twenty persons witnessed a young man of about 17 years hopelessly drunk on the streets, falling over the sidewalk and narrowly escaping a broken neck. 'Ihat there are more _drunks on the street; gf Souris than in Charlettetown, or any place on the Island. That there are more men half drunk and looking for iight, and “Sing Vile language onthe streets of Sonris than st-rangers have heard elsewhere. Thats on Monday afternoon last a poor farmer was so drank in Souiis that he was rolled up almost in a ball and left for dead in a deld near a store. This unfortunate had two bottles of whiskey in his pockets, Still other of the sad results of the traffic impressed themselves upon this visitor to Souris, but let what we have given suiiice. We do not propose to enter into any con- troversy on the subject. The facts indi- cate a notorious and open viola ion ofthe law, continued from week to week and not creditable to the town. We are sure that 11° 011° 1`¢8l`¢ts the sad condition more than do the many sober, law-abiding citizens of Souris. We hope to see the Dl‘°P¢r remedy applied and the ruin dons C1°°¢d UD- Ooncealment of the facts will never eifect that result. There is nothing _ that the lavrbreakers favor so much as S¢°l'°¢I and concealment. Truth seeks the light, and all reforms heretofore effected in the world have begun with the It will be to the credit ofSou1-is to have T the Scott Act enforced and to have sobriety and order prevail as we hope to see in the near future. that evefy day ii---¢Qq@-i_& -Q (JHARLOTTETOWN MARKETS. In his speech the other day at Hunter River, according to The Patriot report. Hon.Mr Farquharson stated that “he con- sidered it his right to represent this rid- ing." This isa very strong and unusual claim, for the only possible meaning of the statement is that Mr. Farqnbarson thinks be has the sole right of representing ‘Vest Queens, to the exclusion of all others. and t that no ohe else has any right in the ma?- ter. The riding can only have one repre sentative and Mr. Faiquharson asserts this right to be that one. It may be worth whileto point out that the people have the right to say whom their rqiresenta- t’ve shall be. D Again Mr. Farquharson objects to being “turned down". And yet it seems from his own remarks as reported by thc Patriot that he, first of all turned himself down. We quote: He Mr. Farquharson, paid a warm tri- bute to Sir Louis Davies, the late repre- sentative f_o_r West Queens, and referred to a eonversiition he had' had with Sir Louis previous to his retirement and in which he stated he did not intend to offer as a candidate in the Riding. At that time he preferred toremain in the Local House, anh pointed out to Sir Louis that holding a portfolio would make itsworth his, Sir Louie’~while to be in the Domi- nion politics, but without such O he (Mr. Ferquharson) could see verylittle induee- ment to enter the Federal Parliament. Now the portfolio is gone, and it looks as if this province -might lose it altogether on account of the result of the census. Here it will be seen that he told Sir Louis Davies ho did not intend to be a candidate for the Commons; that he pre- ferred to remain in the Local House; and admitted that there was little or no chance of his obtriiiiinga portfolio at Ottawa if he were elected. (It was long after this that the Patriot was from day to day putting forward the claim that Mr Farquharson should be sent to Ottawa to take the portfolio about to be vacated by bir Louis i) But we wish to show and have shown, from his own words that if there has been any at tempt to turn down his claims to *»= a candidate that he made the turn hit-t lf.
