AYERS, Dentis | | cee ————— “Of Special Interest | toour Farmer wm Cheese Still Advancing. The advance in cheese continues unabated, and now, instead of roc. as an export basis, there are holders in Montreal so sanguine that they predict an 11¢. market before the smal] stocks remaining in Canada are absorbed. It is just possible that they may be too optimistic, but it seems reasonable higher. At the rate of which cheese 1s going out, week by week, the 400,000: odd boxes remaining in Canada will soon be exhausted. Since navigation closed, the ship ments from Montreal have averaged o boxes per week, and, with: this volume maintained, it should only take eight or nine weeks to move every cheese in Canada. ‘That they will not as many holders to assume that prices are rome =‘ Ins 50O,OCc . yet rfain 5 4 ste Certain reiuctant sellers at consider that they holding on. present, and will make money by Every mail advice encourages them in this stand, for they all repeat the fact that the home make in great Britain is sivaller than it w j Accordingly, with exports from North America this season away behind those of the years named, the English make and prices fully tc, per Ib. below the level ruling, it does seem as iS In 1890—9 ; ti 7 aecreaseqd, though owners of cheese were justified in looking for further appreciation in values At present toc. is the best price that has been made over the tryer in Mont = oe — L,} } . salawd real, Dut over the cabDie the equivaiant of a fraction more has possibly been | realized.—-Canadian Grocer. _ 7 The Farm Mortgage. NM i ‘ be IO IS- ltoa debt of this kind that so +} +} } » iong as they can manage with the great- | est effort to pay the interest they are content and think they are doing fairly ’ ry 1 ° ° well. ‘The thought of ever paying the principal is beyond their highest am bition. Their tathers lived and work ed and died with this same old mort-— gage, and they expect to follow in their footsteps. Now the farm mo-tgage has come to j } COTS ‘AA as CVE a2ng Oniy CVI. But to this statement I am prepared to take exception,as a mortgage is in many cases a positive benefit. It en ables a young man without much} mey to gain possession of a } and create a home. It often en ) make improvements by g him with the capital which could not obtain, and which he can use to good advantage in making his farm more productive and putting himself in a positien te make more money. The trouble is not with the mortgage but withthe man. ‘To some men it is a blessing ; to others it is a curse. For a man who has his farm clear of debt and is making a comfortable livi- ing but who thinks he should dress his family better, educate his children at some fashionable boarding school or have a nicer turnout on Sundays, or who thinks the old house is not quite fine enough, and looks to a mortgage as an expedient to furnish him the needed money to carry out these plans, for such a man it is a dan- gerous and foolish thing, for he thus voluntarily burdens himself for fanci- ed needs which do not put him in a position to make more money out of the farm, but . f e1 the reverse, and he must spend more, rather than make more. otherw.se he | college, or The ease with which money can be borrowed is a gerat temptation to some men to mortgage their farms and squander the money thus obtained in something which they would be far better without. So I would say to the san without a mortgage, think more than twice before you mortgage your farm. Perhaps that piece of land which you are thinking of buying would better be left alone until you have the cash with which to buv it. Chink of the anxiety you may have ibout meeting the payments as they become due, and that it is bettter to ive along in the old way and be free of debt than have a nicer house with this incubus hanging ever you. To the man now struggling under a mortgage I would like to give a little encouragement. If I were he I would try and invent some plan of making a few extra dollars to pay on the principal each year; because every dollar thus paid lesens your interest payments, and is is surprising how a few dollars thus paid every year will tend to lessen the load, besides the satisfying thought that you are making some progress, even though it may be small.—-Lyle Merton in Agricultural Epitomist. _ To prevent onions from sprouting they should be kept during the winter as near tne freexing point as_ possible without actual freezing point as possible without actual freezing. A good method is to tie them in strings three or four feet long and bang these in a dry place, but they should be well dried before being hung up In a very few years the export egg and poultry trade of this country will be among Canada’s leading industries. Better methods of gathering and pre- serving the eggs are needed, and better methods of feeding and preparing the poultry for market must be put in force to make the most out of the business. ~Farming. The Best Fruits of Agriculture. The occupation of farming should produce the best kind of people. It affords agreeible physicalZexercise ; is carried on amid pure air and sunshine. f As farmers understand more of the principles that underlie all the oper— itions of the farm, they will have much more enjoyment in carrying on their work.
