Burnett, FRIDAY, JANUARY 6, 1928 QUEBEC AND THE EMPIRE. I . gtrong ,_ ‘ ‘of opinion. prepared by the Fathers of Confed- eration and made law by the King andl-‘arliament of the Mother Coun- try. l-le said at the Montreal Re- form Club, a short time ago: “We French-Canadians in the Province of Quebec, feel that the British con- nection is essential to our future. It‘ is important to you—meaning the English-speaking Canadians — also. If you break that tie, where shall‘ we go? Whither will we drift? In- dependence? Annexation to the United States? We do not want afl- nexation to the United States. In- dependence? Where will we get that way? Can we desire anything more than membership of the greatest Empire in, the world?" These are questions to be consid- ered by the people, and particularly by the Liberals of Canada. All true Conservatives stand for the main- tenance Q! the Canadian Constitu- tion and for British connection. Bu! many Liberals have allowed the idea of Independence to creep into their minds and some have given expres- sion to it. Evidently Premier Tas- chereau-Leader of the Liberals of Quebec—felt that it was needful for him to "speak out inmeetlng." No doubt the idea was broached at the Convention of (Provincial Premiers held last year. Premier Taschereau sees. as every one who takes the trouble to think about it sees. that Independence for Canada is impos—- sible in all the circumstances by which Canada is surrounded. Apart‘ from the British Empire Canada would necessarily and really be a mere adjunct of the United States. Called “Independent,“ Canada could take no important step in any direc- tion, against the will and without the leave, of the Government of the adjoining Great Republic. As if is. the overwhelming influence of the United States—-rlch and strong. dir- ected by clear-hcaded and resolute men, devoted to the inferests of their own country,—sways to a great ex- tent the wills and affections of the, politicians at Ottawa. But everyone‘ knows that with Great Britain, and the other British Dorninions. at its back, there is a point beyond which the President of the United States for the time being cannot go, how- ever he may be disposed toward Can-j ada and the British nationality. ' On the other hand. Canada in‘ company with the other Dominions ' lll the British Empire, is practically free to adopt any policy and pursue: any course that he, parliament and vfirsifiiithefine M‘ Manny‘ wife of the law outside the jails. Four were >++eoo++~¢+0*¢*°-“**’**" Government may deem to be for the good of the people of the countryj In the conditions and circumstances" which prevail at the present time, mobile slipped on. the rear of the people of Canada cannot anything more than membership of‘ the greatest Empire in the world." should. at the beginning of the year, be reminded of this important fact. We have to thank Premier, Taschereau for his timely reminderl of it. In his opinion, his fellow-Lib-. erals evidently need the reminder. 1 CRIME AND INBANITY.
