Flags at half mast yesterday led
many to inquire the cause, and they
quickly lcai‘iied, what caused- gener~l
sorrow, that Arcliibiilil McNeill was
dead. l'pwn.i‘i_l~ of a ‘gear ago lie had
been stric`:<i_\ii with paralysis, and he
never fu ly recovewd from the shock.
Down to that v'=i’:~ ho had carried the
weight of his iiearly foul' score years
with so much alert and active vigor
that few realized now old he , Nas.
In early sife he ;.i_u_::,ht school, first at
Vernon River. His active mind and
good speaking abilities lel him ti
take an active interest in the country’s
alfiirs. He took part in the struggle
for responsible government , the dis~
cussi ‘ii ofthe land question, free
schools, and later as an advocate of
cofifedemtiou. F-ir a time he was
Deputy Registrar of Deeds, and then,
on a change of government resumed
teaching. Later he took up business
as an au~;tioneei‘. In 1873 he was
appointed Clerk of the House of As-
sembly, which position ne held for
twenty ve-irs, and when removed he
na‘urn`il_\' resented the dismissal.
Mr. McNeill filled other public po-
sitions in connection with provincial
exhibitions, the St. Andrews Society,
the Caledonian Club and the Char-
lottetown Debating Club. He was an
ardent Caledonian, honest, manly and
' outspoken in all the relations of life,a
faithful public servant in oiice and a
» good citizen always. From 1854
down to 1898 he never missed at-
tending the annual Scottish gathering, _
and all who were present at the last
. meeting will remember how universal
l
of regret that the veteran was de-
prived by illness from meeting with
his brothers. He bore the budetiugs
of adverse fortune bravel , even
'fever he sleeps well."
