The cstceiucd Pfttriot. as in duty boun-ii, bc-ina a party paper, uiakcs as little an possible of the evils disclosed during the election trial; did not tluil it worth vvliile So print the terse dcliverauces of thc ,Judges who tried the petition;fourid space ‘for the oral examination of Mr. Ma.:-tin ‘,’ but not for the exauxination of 111'. Mc- Kinnon. We are not flirting fault with this action of the Patriot which doeupretty much as other piirty papers do in uiakiniz the best of the case for its own party and the worst of the case for the opposing party. \Vc wish to note, however, that :hose who read only one party paper can- not be well-informed as to the facts in such matters as election trials. There is one feature of the Patriots’ treatment of the trial, however, to which we do take exception. It is in its treat- ment of Lite liquor evil in that connection. This is the way the Patriot puts it: ` "The evidence did. however, show that whiskey had been distributed in some of the polls in a manner that could not be too strongly condemned." In some of the polls! More than twenty ' of the witnesses sworn testified to the use of liquor in connection with the elec- 0 tion. At almost every poll that was brought under review whiskey was used in smaller or larger quantities. Mr. Justice Hudson at the close of the trial spoke of the “shameless corruption and debaucliery" as the worst that had ever been brought to his not-ice in connection with an election trial, and Mr. Justice Fitzgerald spoke of “delnging the country- with liquor," and of the “electorate wholly dobauchod by liquor." These words of the Judges certainly give a very different impression from what the Patriots editorial conveys. \Vhicb is the correct impression? Andi why suppress what the Judges had to say? _.__°__ Despatehes from Otttavva to both Liberal and Conservative papers express the opinion that when Parliament meets the Conservative caucus will select Mr. R. L. Borden of Halifax an leader, to sue- ceed Sir Charles Tupoer. Mr. Borden is a man of time talents, a lawyer of rcpute *` and is now in his forty-seventh year. He was first elected to Parliament in 1896 and camo rapidly to the front as a debater. Down to 1386 Mr. Borden was a. Liberal. Should he be selected as leader in pre~ ference to Sir Hibbert Tup-per, Hon. Mr. Foster, or any of the other older members whose names have been mentioned in connection with the leadership, it will be a strong tribute to his fine talents, sound _judgment and unfuilinsr courtesy. *_-Q It is wired from Montreal that the Canadian tire underwriters have decided to make u general advance in the rates of fire insurance throughout Canada. This ia unpleasant news, and it has followed so close upon the destructive tire in Montreal that the action may have been caused by that disaster. Isolated country risks ought not to be affected by such a cause, but the insurance compiinieshave matters very much their own way. I- I _ ._ . g .. .J. ,_ _gi-_ _, _ _ _ __ `_ ,g ._ ,,,`,,;.
