“Single Sam," who lives in King’s
County has covered three col-
umns of fools-cap paper with Whitt
1, he knows, or thinks he knows of
i“Modei'n Women’s Follies and HGW
They Could be Rectified.” Ho
writes this, he tells us for publication
5 in Tiii: GUARDIAN and “for the bene-
'tit of the Women’s Council in Char-
lottetown.” Not all of his letter
lcomes within the category of what is
l printable, but it may be worth while
to give the ladies a taste of Sam’s
quality and they may then, if they
please go into secret session and de-
cide upon apenalty suitable for the
'offending bachelor.
Sam complains that while women
in the Local Council and elsewhere
,will talk themselves hoarse over the
l moral slavery of cruel,ha.rd domineer-
ing man, they are themselves -“the
sniveling slaves of French fashion.”
They wear corsets, “a practice so
much despised by all true men
and women.” They lace their forms
tightly, ‘ thus taunting the Creator
with not giving them ribs strong
enough to support their bodies.” The
hair, given to women as their glory,
is scoi-_:hed and crimped ,when it turns
grey from such maltreatment it is
dyed: when it becomes thin a. switch
is pinned on, and then the fair one
“tosses her borrowed plumes” and
would have us ignorant males believe
that all is natural!
Sam further desires to impress
upon the ladies that the most perfect
feminineiigures were those of semi-
civilized people or of apostolic days,
who knew not corsets, bang s, wigs
or tight fitting jackets with balloon
sleeves, or tooth-pick boots to squeeze
their dainty feet. He “likes to see a
graceful figure if it is natural,`out it is
poor comfort when a man marries the
woman of his choice to find her out
. _ . as a whited sepulchre of
feminine deceit.” _
The entire letter will be preserved
for afew days for the inspection of
such members of the Local Council
as may desire to peruse it all. After
that we shall never expect to hear
.from Single Sam again. Still we
beg the good ladies not to be
,too hard on Sam. No doubt
he has met with sad disappointments
in his time. The fox cried “sour
grapes” when the grapes were beyond
his reach. Many a. poor bachelor has
found it a. solemn journey across the
fields from the cheerful home of some
fairone to his'lonely quarters in the
darkness after being told that “he
needn’t come any more.” If in such
ajourney Sam has found all life’s
sweetness turned to gall, and has
rushed to the conclusion that all
women are frauds and shams he is' to
be pitied.
We give Sam fair warning that if
the Woman’s Council in wordy war-
fare and worsting them in the connict
he is most wofully mistaken. They
can (metaphorically) “talk him blind
and write him out of existence. Think
of how your bachelor house-keeping
would bear the test of feminine in-
spection, Sam. Think of the dude
