As further particulars coma to hand there are materials for a better estirrate of the Japanese victory on the Yhlll River. It appears that General Sassu- litch, the Russian commander, had at least 30,i£I) men with which to oppose the Japanese crossing. The Japanese force was probably two cr three times as great, and was also superior in artillery, although not in like proportion, but less strong than the Russians in cavalry. Russian accounts say it was not their intention to have seriously opposed the orossiniz of the Yalu. This is about as absurd as to say that in the Crimean war the Russians did not mean to seriously oppose the passage of the Alma by the English and French armies. Had the allies been defeated at Alma they would have been driven back to their ships. Had Sassulitch been able to prevent the Japanese from crosslllll DUB Yllll 11° would doubtless have done so, and held them there until reinforcements arrived, when the Russian forces would have assumed the oifensive and invaded Korea. It is true that the 30,000 Russians who for tive days fought to DNVGUU U10 DHB- ssize of the Yalu nre but a small portion ofthe total Russian force in the East. But it was evidently all that Kuropatkln could spare for the purpose. Various ‘reports tell that there are 30,000 Russian troops at Port Arthur, a strong force at New Chwang, a larger concentration at Mukden and still larger at their principal base in Harbin, with perhaps 10,000 at ORDINARY CORN CURES ARE DANGEROUS. because they contain acids, but Putnam's Painless Corn and W'art Extractor is entirely vegetable in comppsitiun. It is safe tasty that the 'total Russian iorce in Manchuria is less than the Russian ac- counts have given out. For instance, they claimed to have 50,iXXl men cu the Yalu River weeks asc, but now that they havemct defeat the claim is’ set up ' that there were but iD,020 or lass. The Cos- sack force which was reported to be sweeping down through northeastern Korea and threatening the Japanese rear, is now admitted to have been present at the battle on the Yalu River. Baron Hayashi, the Japanese minister in Loudon, who ought to be welifinform- ed, has given out his opinion that the Russians had before the battle no more than 100 guna in all Manchnria and that with the losses of Sunday last their artil- lery was diminished almost one this-d.'l.'his is perhaps an extreme view, but it serves to give an idea ofjthe importance of a bat- tle which one Ieadlng London newspaper has compared to Waterloo. The battle has at lent this signiilcanca that the tirs t time the Japanese have mot European troops in battle, the latter being strongly entrenched. the victory was won by the Japanese. This isa fact of tremendous iruport. Baron Hayashi in the interview referr- ed to stated quite frankly that at some point, it may be at Mukden, or possibly at Harbin, the aggressive movement of the Japanese will cease, and they will there- after simply defend the ground they have won. Then they will be entrenched and it will remain to be seen whether the Russians can drive them back. Baron Hayashi admits that neither Port Arthur nor Vlndivostcck can be taken from the seafront, but adds, “I think you will find Port Arthur either taken by our land forces or starved out by September.” He does not think Russia will send out her Baltic fleet to face the autumn hurricanes of the eastern waters, modestly omit- ting any reference to the greater dangers from Japanese worships, torpedoes and mines. It is to be observed that the Japanese movements on land have been carried out with admirable precision and clock-work regularity. General Kuroki some time ago said, “i will attack on the ilrst of May." The dny sat proved a great “mov- ing day" for both Japan and Russia. He evidently knew his ground and his men. The crossing was made at precisely the date named and precisely the same point as in the war with China in 1895. But it wus not this time a Chinese force that opposed the passage, but a Russian force. Yet, Kurokl knew his men and they proved equal to the task. The battle of the Yalu serves to recall the battle at the Alma of 50 years ago, in which with a river to cross 26,000, British, 24,000 French and 7,Cf) Turks, a total of 57,000 men, wlth IZB field guns, attacked an entrenched Russian force of 40,000 with LUMBAGO GURED AGAIN Weil-Known Stcckgrower Used Dodd's Kidney Pills and Gives the Result. The allies were victorious, but too weary to pursue the dying enemy. They captured no Runs, and only ff) prisoners, most of whom were wounded men. The Japanese have done much better, capturing many guns, moral prisoners, and pursuing their enemy for thirty or forty miles. Moreover we must not forget that with modern weapons the defensive is relatively much stronger than it was in the days nf the Crimean war.| Well may the British press express its admiration and the continental papers their astonishment. The Japanese have proved themselves the equals of the best European troops, and we shall expect great things oi them hereafter as the war progresses. Military men are destined to learn new lessons from the war in the east, includ- ing the re-learning of some old lessons. which were thought to be disprcven during the Boer War. It was said after our experience with the Bcers that frontal attacks upon intrenohed positions must be discarded. And yet the Japanese appear to have crossed the Yaiu in front of the enemy, and then, turning to the left made a second frontal attack across the Aiho River, a tribu‘ary and fcrdable s'ream, upon the heiahts beyond, which they stormed at the point of the bayonet. We have also been told that the bayonet is useless in modern warfare, but the Japanese do not think sc. The Ruaaiau account aaya “the Japanese under fire made repealed bayonet attacks on nur tracts." It sets one to thinking whit would have been the outcome had Kuruki and an equal number of his laps instead of Baller and his British force been opposed tn the Boers at Tugaia.
