A movement on foot in New Brunswick with the object. of secur- ing clean elections is worthy of more than passing notice. It is the re- sult of a revolt of the moral H00 Christian sentiment of the Province against the corrupt practices that have long and increasingly prevailed to the discredit of our modern civil- ization and which have fouled the very fountains of our representative system. C,ergymcn aah Christian leaders have been foremost in the work; organisation has been elected and in some half a dozen counties already the can candidates for the Legislature have accepted the pledge to promote honest and clean elec- tions. The following is the pledge taken by the eight candidates for the four seats in Westmorland County, and is similar to that in use in other counties: - "The undersigned being thc candi- "dates at the election now about to "be held of members to represent “the electoral district of the County "of Westmorland in the Legislative "Assembly, and the several other “persons whose names are subscrib- "ed feeling it desirable in the public "welfare that no bribery within thc "meaning oi' the New Brunswick "Controverted Elections Act or any "Act in; amendment thereof should be "practised or committed during or “at the present election, or that in- "toxicating liquors should be used to "influence any voter to vote at said "election, do hereby pledge them- selves and severally agree each with “the other .to commit no act of bri- “bery or in any way countenance ‘fthe commission of any act or bri- "bery in any form at or during said “election or to use or countenance "thc use of intoxicating liquors at "or during said election. They also "severally undertake and ggree to do "all in their power to prevent bri- “bery from being committed or prac- “tised at or during said election or "intoxicating liquors being used "thereat, and to this end or purpose "they undertake and agree to ac- "quaint each other of all and every "act of bribery of which they have "any information, knowledge or he- "lict of having been commitltcd or "practised at or during said elec- "tion, or of the use of intoxicating "liquors tgereat. commits the candidates and such supporters as also sign it to dis- ‘countenance and suppress by all Lawful means the corrupt use of money and liquors in the coming excellent movement against a great evil. Already it has set the vice of corruption in the limelight of public 'disfavor, and the result of the edu- japlagd ug 4 mg; g|ugh_ Wm in, It will be observed that the pledge . . p I -1 I cative work at public meetings, in ‘ _ THURSOAYFEB 20 | Lace Curtain and Draperies Clearance Sale l , ~~ - At the height of the season few stores s_h_o\_v anything like so complctean assort- ment in these goods as we do at the present t;i~me.‘ » ' ‘ -I . We hope to see n like movement ad- opted in our own Province and in all the Provinces before the next elections federal and provincial are held. - The movement in the sister Prov- ince has sprung up outside the pol- itical partiesl It is as we have said a noble insurrection of the moral` and Christian sentiment of thc, country against a giant evil. It has great possibilities that mean much for the furture of Canada, and may go far to cleanse the Augean stable of political life. Its success depends upon -thc carncstness of the Christian and moral leaders of the community pastors, churches, and moral rc~ formcrs, and surely the sub-ect is one to he in.earnest about. In this con- nection we hope to sec a strong re- vival of tue movement set on foot a year ago in this city for this worthy object. This is important and timely in vicw of the fact that we are to have two general elections this year. _ And now Ottawa has opened its police court on Sunday. The Citizen tells that the Sunday court is likely to be continued, though it opens up a wide field of possibilities as to the legality of what may be done on that day in court and otherwise. Newfoundland had last year the largest revenue in its history, and .though the expenditure was also Our own Island Province in cou- iederation has had a long series oi deficits. Newfoundland, conducting her own affairs has had surpluses i year by year for seven years past. The Department of Agriculture, Ottawa, has issued a revised and enlarged illustrated edition of the famous Bullentin No. 10 dealing with the production of bacon for the British market. The Bulletin is timely and valuable. It will interest our readers to learn that copies may be obtained free on application to .the Live Stock Commissioner, Ottawa. ` Ottawa city is having a controver- sy with the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Company over its projected station and hotel, there. The agree- ment with the city was that the company would spcndrtwo and a half *million dollars on thc two struc- tures, but. the company now propose to cut down the cost by amillion The city objects to the breach of faith. The St.. John Globe in thlr connection states that the common report is that the new transcon- tincntal road will cost at least a third more than was first estimated' This is rather alarming in view ’ oi the known fact that the Government has undertaken to build the 1800 miles of road hetwccn Moncton and Winnipeg. ._-______..._-i THE MEIKLE CASE. SIR.--In n recent issue of The Guardian appeared an account of an application made before the commit- tee _on Counties in Boston, by James H. Slsk, Counsel for Edgar Mciklc, who, was acquitted by the Essex County Court for the murder of his father, asking that the guardian of the said Edgar Mclkle, Joseph S. 'I‘remble,_ might be reimbursed the sum of fifteen hundred dollars ex- pcnsc incurred by the defense during the trial of the said Edgar Meiklc. It is aa -follows :- lt was brought out at hearing that the boy 'would never have been triad had it not been for the fact that ha- sturdily refused to allow his uncle to be appointed adminis- trator and take him to Prince Ed- ward Tsland. Judge Sick told the committee in this connection that the Lynn police had satisfied them- selves after the fullest investigation, of Mcikle's innocence. The facts are these. The Lynn police never hold an investigation. No sworn testimony was ever taken before them. On the second morn- ing after my arrival in Lynn I in- terviewed the state police and an in- vestigation was promised me and ai- terwards held/ On the very -lay l arrived in Lynn I was satisfied in my own mind that there was s-rung evidence that my brother came to his death by suspicious means. 1 at once came to the conclusion last his son was the guilty party which re- sulted in my laying information be- fore the state police. Doris it not seem an utter absurdity to say that I should ask to be appointed guar- dian of n boy whom I at that time believed to have committed the crime for which I was demanding an investigation 'I My contention is borne out by the fact that I inform- ed the Rector of St. Stephens Epis- copal Church at Lynn that no con- sideration whatever would induce me to become this boys guardian, or to bring him to Prince Edward,Island_ Yours truly, ROWLAND MEIKLE. l____..,._»_--_- Wnman|v_Trouh1’es Should Not Be Allowed to Under- iuiue Health.
