Tut Patrivt has the following rather good story in connection with the removal of the prisoners in Queen’s County Jail to Kingston Penitentiary :—‘‘ One of the prisoners—O’ltielly— was accompanied by a large rat which he carried inside the breast of his jacket. It seems that he has demesticated several of the rodents which frequented his cell, and he seemed to be especially fond ef this one which he called ‘* Mucksy.” He pleaded so hard to be al- lowed to take his strange pet with him that the jailer could not find it in his heart to refuse him. ‘' Mucksy” was the cause of a somewhat amusing ineident just be- fore the priseners were removed. They were being searched by the oflicers, who wished to make sure that they had no for- bidden articles concealed in their clothing. One of Mr. Moylan’s deputies—a French Oanadian—came up to O’Rielly and pro- ceeded to search him. He thrust his hand into the breast of O’Rielly’s © coat where ‘‘ Mucksy” was comfortably nestled Feeling something soft come into contact with his hand he thought had made a find, and proce.ded to bring the concealed ob- ject to view. Now, it appears that this particular French Canadian has an uncon: querable antipathy to rats, and when he ht sight of ‘*‘ Mucksy’s” white teeth gleaming eyes it proved too much for his nerves. ‘‘ Mon Dieu le sacre cochon,” he exclaimed in a tone of horror, dropping the rat and starting back several feet. The man’s face became as white as a sheet, and he did not get over his fright for some time. He took care to keep at a respectful distance from (’Rielly after this incident, evidently thinking that a man who carried rats about his person was a dangerous character.” Se PEMAINS & VERN Invite the attention of buyers to their large, well as- sorted, and CHHAP STOCK, of the following goods: MANTLE CLOTHS, ULSTER CLOTHS, TWEED SUITINGS, WORSTED COATINGS, WHITE FLANNELS, SCARLET FLANNELS SHIRTING FLANNELS, FRENCH TWILL FLANNELS.
