Will produce a finer pol- ' The Hindoo’s Favorite Method of Escaping the Tax Gatherer, Never during its existence has India been so rich in jewelry as now. The peo- ple are always adding to their stock. Say- ings from nearly all sources are disposed of in this way, and these savings are be- , ing constantly made —often at the ex- pense of clothing, sometimes at the ex- pense of greater necessaries of life. The , making and the storing away of wealth in this form 1s the national peculiarity of the country. Jewelry is regarded as the most stable kind of wealth, and fortunes are never counted without estimating the value of the stock in jewelry. It can always be pledged or disposed of. The market for its sale is never closed and never de- pressed. The most ignorant native who wishes to sell a piece of jewelry knows its market value quite well. He can scarcely be cheated. Jewelry forms the greatest factor in matrimony. The most lowly bride has her stridhan, which is occasionally equal in value to five years’ income of the bridegroom. There is often a scarcity of clothing, sometimes a scarcity of cooking pots, generally not a particle of furni- ture, but nearly always a stock of jew- elry. The wife that has no jewelry pos- sesses nothing else; she can not be robbed. The family that does not have jewelry 1s absolutely indigent. One of the greatest boasts of the jew- elry owner is that his hoards can not be taxed. A man may own jewelry valued at a lakh of rupees and pay no income tax. This is a source of great satisfac- tion. Jewelry yields no recurring in- come, but it-is prized more than Govern- ment paper. If it never increases it never diminishes, is a national saying, common among men and women alike. No native marriage, except among the most impoy- erished, takes place without a transfer of jewelry, and very frequentiy of new jew- elry.—London Tid-Bits. The bands of Pancho, Curillo, Eequera, Dojar, Torrer, Mirabel, Keosta and the negro Ealero have been moving in the neighborboo | of CaiLarien. The export of bananas from Gibara, Neuvitas and Obris has been prohbiiced on the ground that steamers engaged in the trade bring resources to the insurgents. The local guerilla force at Poso Redondo, Havana Province, killed five insurgents and captured the insurgent mejor, Antonio Pina, of the band of Perico Delgado. Important documents were taken with hins. At the request of the English consu', the Queen regent has pardoned an English soldier named Louis Mazzaron, an insur- gent, who was sentenced to be shot at Matanzas. News received at Key We t from Cuba is that Dr. Zayas, the insurgent leader, is in Juroco, Province of Havana, and on Satur- day he had an engagement with (ener! The combiration against Maceo in the province of Pinar Del Rio has resulted in several small engagements, in which Maceo completely routed two bands of guerillas and captured sixty pieces of arms, and the Spaniards now claim that they cannot find Maceo. Too many people “work on their nerves,’’ and the result is seen in un- fortunate wrecks marked “nervous pros- tration,” in every direction.
