Catheiic demonstrations were made in various parts of Ireland yesterday in con nexion with the fifteenth ef August (Lady Day) celebration At Dungannon the demonstration was attended with serious rioting. The police, who had been serious- ly stened, fired upon che procession, killing ene man and wounding twentty others. There was also rioting in other parts of the country and several police were injured, JAGDALAK, Aug. 15. General Stewart's force has reached Schbaba, in the Ghilzai country. The Apaeer will enter Bala-Hissar in state to- day. Cabul is quret. Canpanar, Aug. 16, The irregulars occupy the neighboring villages. Ayoob Khan has brought a few guns to bear on the city, but they are too far away to de m ich danage. About 8,000 Afghans have beeu expelled from the city. The garrison is well provisioned except with fresh meat. Rumors of General Roberts’ advance have reached Candahar. Lonpon, Aug. 16, A Calcutta despatch says it is almost the universal opinion m India that the ac- tien of the Government in simultaneously evacuating Cabul and sending Gen. Roberts en his haszardous march to Candahar is un- wise and rash in the extreme. The New York Times says that Miss Neilson’s death was doubtless from heart disease. An unwonted sensation was caused at Berlin by a telegram from Paris, summer- izing a letter by Gambetta to a Councillor General, published in the Verite. It is generally disbelieved. Nevertheless it is thought by some to express Gambetta’s thoughts and has producec. a painful im- pression. The Paris Republique Francaise an- nounces that Gainbetta’s letter published in the Verite yesterday, was written on the 16th October, 1871, when it appeared in the Paris newspapers, and was also pub- lished in pamphlet form. The final meeting of the Dublin Mansion House relief committee was held on Satur- day last.
