Walter Jones RHERNIE“!HIR\DIIbIIIIIIIDIIIHHhH What The Arrival of The M. V. “Ahegweit" Means To The Province 0i Prince Edward Island HON. J. WALTER JONES, Premier of the Province of Prince Edward island. The arrival ofthe Canadian National Railways new and palatial M. V. Abegweit to take up her run between Cape Tormentine, N. 5., and Borden, P. E. L, makes this o "red letter day" for the Province of Prince Edward Island. As citizens of this island Province, we have looked forward to the arrival of this splendid ship ever since the unfortunate llnking of the S. S. Charlottetown in i941, and today our fandest hopes are realized. By this statement I do not wish to infer that our transportation problem to and from Prince Edward Island has been solved completely-far from it—but another great step in an effort to improve our transportation facilities has been completed and we now face the future, reassured and feeling confident we will go on to see still further improvements in our time. l Today, history has again been made. We have pro- gressed from the small, open, man-propelled type of boat used to transport passengers and mail during both Summer and Winter in the earlier days to this magnificent ship- the world's most powerful and largest ice-breaker. The ar- rival of this ship in addition to writing another page in hist- ory for our island Province has relieved our thousands of citizens from the worry as to how much longer the aging and much over-worked S. S. Prince Edward Island could carry en the service. The Prince Edward Island and her crew of outstanding seamen have rendered a remarkable service, however, today brings in sight a well-earned rest for a noble old ship and her hard-working crew. Possibly, the most outstanding fact in connection with the arrival for service of this new ship is the manner in which :1 Dominion Government authorities have spared no effort providing our Province with thls fine ship at the earliest possible moment. We here on the Island appreciate all that has been done by "our Dominion authorities to provide us with this ship and must soy that, in our opinion, it is an outstand- ing example of Dominion-Provincial co-operatian. ' Many will benefit as our new Ferry enters the Tormen- tine-Borden service. The Canadian National Railways will be able to move more freight, etc., daily, our farmers’ pro- duce will move to the mainland marlreai meri rapidly, mill chants will receive their goods here on the lsland more promptly, citizens will be able to travel in more security and better comfort, and tourists will be_able to drive on this splendid new boat in greater MlmbCr: and enjoy an improv- ed service. This new Ferry will attract thousands of visitors, es- pecially from the United States, our friendly neighbour to the South. ln so doing, these visitors will want to enjoy a sail on the "Abegweit" and hence will visit our ommunities in increasing numbers. Everything possible will e done on the Ferry to make these visitors comfortable, I can assure you, as the Canadian National Railways will see that first- class service, including dining facilities, will be provided. The Government of Prince Edward lslond, through its Travel Bureau, will endeavour to aid all travellers by providing an information Desk with an attendant in the lounge or some suitable spot on the Ferry. With this in view, the only thing left to be done for our visitors will be to extend to them, as in the past, every possible bit of our Island hospitality. Please rest assured that this will be done-we plan to make our visitors feel that the island is their home away from home". ' ln conclusion, l would like to state that this. wonderful sliip of ours is a monument to the work and skill of Canadian workmen and industry. She was built with Canadian ma- terial in a Canadian Shipyard by Canadians, and primarily for Canadians. Looking at this ship, I think you will agree with me that we have came a long way in this young country ef ours when Canadian indssst can produce the material for such a ship and when our Zanadian workmen and tech- nicians can do such a splendid iob. On behalf of the Gov- ernment and people of Prince Edward Island I want to take this opportunity of saying many~ thanks to the Dominion Gor- ernment and workmen who have made it possible for this fine ship to arrive hers today, and I would also like to state that with the arrival of this ship we islanders are reminded more than ever that we an part of the grand Dominion of Canada, of which we are iustly proud.
