The gas car that brought us up to the inn is called the galloping goose, and it certainly gallops and the funny old run we went for the climb on is called the Toonerville Trolley. I took a room at the inn as it would be too lonely outside in one of the cabins alone. Besides out there I would have to build my own fire in the fireplaces in the cabins, Whereas in the Inn all I have to do when it is cold is to turn on the electric heater. I was stiff after our climb so my exercise yesterday and today con- sisted of short hikes and golf on the little course which was only two acres, and one can use only the clubs that wont send s. ball over eighty yards. I'm used to playing on a. one hundred and fifty acre course. But this is only a toy course. Most of the people 1 met on Saturday's trip went away yesterday, so I dcn‘t know many now and there are very few people here. There are cnly about fourteen and the place accommodates about two hundred and fifty. It is a. bad year and people who have cars spend their holidays camping in their cars and cooking their ovm meals. There are lots of bears here, but they leave us alone if we do not tease them. One pwed right in front cf the Inn to- day. looked us over and parsed on. A great big black one lives near here and feeds on the garbage. We went down to call on him this morning but when he saw us he turned around and beat it into the forest. Yesterday on a. walk down the track I don't know how many snakes were out sunning themselves and as each one saw us they beat it too. But the flies are awful, they call them the deer flies and how they bit. We put paper in our stockings and still they bite. On Saturdays party there was a teacher from Stockholm, Sweden, and the flies would light on her arms and never bite her and no one could puz- zle why. One thing about these deer flies is that we can kill them as soon as they bite. Today two children and I took a safe trail up in where the men were cutting wood for the Inn. They had felled a tree 5i‘: feet in dia- meter and I don't know how long. When split up they figured it up six- teen cords cf firewood from one tree. It was lovely in the deep. cool forest. but we couldn't sit down long on ac- count of the flies. The men told us we ought to meet two brown bears and if we did to pay no attention to them and not to tease them but they didn't cross our trail. A creek runs in front of the Inn and it is lovely at night to hear the sound of the watch-A. The new tweede are perfection, VIOLIN TEACHER I136". SEPTEMBER 9 C!IARLOTTE'!'O\VN VIOLIN SCHOOL l0‘!
