Tue Carstake Stakes.—A Montreal des- patch says: A writof attachment has been issued, on behalf of <eorge Carpenter, against the fund of the Carslakes’ Derby sweepstakes, which amount to $50,000, and which are in the hands of Molsun Bank. The plaintiff, in his declaration, claims the money is as forfeited, being the proceeds of a sale of tickets in ‘‘Carslakes’ Derby sweeps,” a lottery which is in violation of law. From the beginning of its manufac'ure uutil now not a single ounce of any but pure See leaf of the finest quality has been u in the ‘‘Myrtle Navy” tobacco, The manufacturers of it have a settled belief that the public cannot be misled oa this point, aud that any tampering with the quality of the brand would be a monetary loss to them. Thousands of dollars a year saved by mixing with an inferior leaf, would not repay them for a doubt on the part of the public as to the quality of their tobaceo. ‘aa Bie Gun Compertition,—The gun competi- tion among the various artillery corps of the Dominion will be held at Halifax this year instead of at the Isle of Orleans, Quebec, as formerly. It was originally intended that a range would be selected on the shores of Bedford Basin, but the expense is so great that it has been decided to abandon this in- tention and the range at Point Pleasant which was used by the Halifax Garrison Artillery previous to the past two years has been fixed upon. The competition will commence on August Ist and willlast a fortnight, The camp will be pitched at a point near the range, Cem rae MAKES FLESH AND BLoop.—When the sys tem is all run down and there seems to be no hope of obtaining nourishment for the body by the ordinary proeess of food supply and digestion, when the body is sinking fast, then ia the time te use Miller's Emulsion of pure Norwegian Cod Liver Oil. The lightning struck the animal on the nose, splitting her in two as thoroughly as if she had been killed by a butcher. During the same storm a barn belonging to Mrs. Landells, at Lower Maccan, was struck by lightning but with- out doing any very serious damage. Two trees about fifty yards from the house of Herbert Harrison, were also struck with the lightning. For about ten minutes the dust on the streets was blown about in such clouds that pedestrians were obliged to hasten to shelter, the dust being so dense that they could not see many yards ahead. A Rare Cuance.—That well known and reliable horse paper, the Horseman, of which our talented young friend, Leslie E. Macleod, is the managing editor, will be sent from the time subscriptions are received after this date until the last issue in October, 1892, to new subscribers, in clubs of five, for one dollar each. The conditions require that the names must be sent in clubs of five or more and must be those of new subscribers. By ‘‘new” is meant those whose names are not now on the subscription list. 1t isimmaterial whether the addresses of the five names are the same poat office or five different ones. This is the same proposition that has been made by the Horseman for several seasons t. the racing season of 1892, the Horseman will be more interesting and complete, if possible, than ever before.
