The attendance was largely made up of Liberal sup- porters representing the school dis- iricts of Lower Bedeque, Fernwood. Centreville. North Bedeque, Pree- town. Middleton and Central Bedeque The total attendance was 27. After considerable discussion on the quea- tion of teachers’ salaries a resolution was passed that the Government re- quest the districts to make a flat ‘in- crease oii fifty dollars. It was sug- gested, however. that in view of the small attendance, any resolution pas- sed at such a meeting could not be considered as representative of the sentiment of the whole commumty. The meeting was one o1 a. series of meetings called by Liberal represen- tatives, obviously for the purpose o! sounding their party supporters as to the feelingin the communities with respect to increased teachers’ salar- aries. The attendance. as in this case, has generally been disappointingly small, and the opinions oxprcssed have been anything but harmonious. The committee were now at work appointing sub-committees to take charge o1 advertising. program- mes. music. etc. Gyro Clark voiced his opinion that the Club could raise more than $15.- 00.00 for the Sanitarium. The speaker of the evening was Mr. J. 0. C. Campbell, .who addressed the Club on “Western Canada's Natural Resources Question," in the course cf his remarks said that the statement often seen in the papers that the Western Provinces were claiming a return of their public lands and nat- ural resources was mislceding — for the reason that they had never pre- viously pcssessed them. What they wanted was to have their public lands and resources handed over to them for the first time. The speaker singled out Manitoba as an example. When that province was formed 1n 1870. it was at the same time as Rup- ert's land was bought by the Domin- ion from tho Hudson's Bay Company (or $1,500,000.00. The lands of Manitoba were not handcdovcr to the Government, but to the people, inasmuch as every set- ler could receive 160 acres of land free. In Prince Edward Island. the town- ships were handed over to Absentee landlords, by lottery in a single day. This caused much dissazbfaction am- en; the people. until. previous to anfederation the Government of the Province bought out some 2-3 of these lands, and sold thcnl to the Lcnarits who rccided cn them. At Confederation, one third of our Icnds. iverc still in tlze hands of Al- "ta proprietors. and not one arr: ovnzzl by the‘ Goverhturzlt. In the negctcticzls, Canada agreed to loan 5830130000 to buy cut these propriet- in cxcilzrlgc infer stlla for th": dcr of our rcvc collecting gcs. On I‘. o: Edward Island's transac- tlcil o.” p1 shes: of these loans and sale to the people w: lost on ‘the transaction. $200,000.00. As to the 5C3) 05.0.00 presumably obtained from Ill: sclc o.‘ ilnds to the trnants. the interest has been 512:2: deducted. so that now we are getting along $5000.- 00 in lieu of public lands. As to Manitoba. the Dominion Gov- ernment bought the lands for them. then gave 160 acres free to the settl- ers. and passed out a subsidy o1‘ $45,- 000.00. Now. had the Dominion Gov- ernmcnt done the same with us- bcught out the lands from the prop- rietors and turned them over to us. the_transa-:tion would have been the same as with Manitoba. But as it is. we have to pay the interest on the money used to purchase them. in- stead of the’ Dominion Government standing that charge. as they did with Manitoba. Moreover, the Western Provincrs, have all demanded, and received, in- creased subsidies in lieu of public lands (now nearly $500,000.00 for the three of them) while ours. on account of tho interest charges, has shrunk to $5000.00. Then the Western Provinces got from the Dominion Government ad- dltional grants for schools. and for the building o! Provincial Parliament buildings. Also the Dominion Gov- eminent, in the West. has helped to develop tho country: it has. for in- stance, built roads tor them. Now tho Western Provinces want control of their natural resources. And the East is quits willing to let them have them. But tho Western Provinces wants more than that. They want tho public lauds hlndod over to thorn, and they also want to retain their subsidy in lieu of public lands; They want to out their cake and have it. mo. \ 1 Canadian Prone) GENEVA, lhrch Iii-Tho tout of a F0108“ for tho nlminlon of tho United ltotd to tho world court was lnnhnoosly up; proud in lml reading at this Dlfldlmllhllfltilfillhdlhllf years. hu travelled 110.000 mills 1n neaflrslinorhottnuworlawltbnu prlcotlm: unanimous.
