' (Canadian Press) OTTAWA, Ont., Feb. 9.-With Parliament to open on March 12, announcement earlier today by Pre- mier R. B. Bennett, on the approval by His Majesty of the selection o'f the_Earl of Bessborough as Canada‘s fourteenth Governor-General, clears the political decks. Appointment of a Canadian Minister to Washington and n statement by the Government on the tariff will probably be made shortly. The tariff statement will likely have precedence in these an- nouncements. From present indica- tions, the successor to Earl Willing- don will not reach Canada before Parliament has assembled. Some lit- tle doubt, at the moment, however, exists. The suggestion has been made that the Earl of Bessborough expedite adjustment of the affairs of his two large estates fn the Brit- ish Isles in time to arrive in tho Capital for the opening. No definite advice of the date of his arrival has Yet been received, and the only of- ficial intimation is that given by Premier Bennett that the new fn- _cumbent of Rideau Hall would take over his duties "at an early date." If the Earl of Bessborough is un- able to reach this country before March 12 a precedent will be estab- lished by the opening of Parliament by the administrator, Mr. Justice Duff. In this eventuality, the hold- ing of the drawing room, out sland- ing social event of the season where debutantes are first presented with the elite to the representative od His Majesty and the state dinner will ‘probably be postponed. i TARIFF HEARING S 0'I'I`AWA, Ont,_ Feb. 9-Premier R.. 8'.
