Editor and Business fiancee!‘- g__g not new AUGUST 30. 1892. Our Oyster Fishery. The Moore Kemp, the oyster experts sent out from London by Sir Charles Tapper to report on the Canadian oyster beds arrived in the city yesterday after- noon from the Western part of the Is- land, having completed a thorough ex- amination of Richmond Bay,the Narrows, Bideford River, front Riva‘, slfl other This week they will inspect North, East and West Rivers and Orwell Bay. . In convermtion with the Hours Kemp we was informed that they had come to the eoneldon that three things are necessary for the psssssvsfien of our oyster liahuy. lm, a bettm-observance of tb slsm ssssm. find. prevention of hnfing the cyan breed an! ad. the stoppage of mussel mud digging. They further state tlmt immediate action '3 _nse:ryandwilladvimthatrulssbe adopted at once for the coming season's fiahcy. which Septxhu 15th. As regards the first two suggestions there can be no diflerencsof opinion. The second suggestion is especially imporhnt. Take an instance: lastyearabout Q1011) hbls of oysters and oyster brood were fished in Richmond Bay. When the brood oysters werepicked outthere remained but 40,lX)0 bhls for shipment. That is 20,(lX)bbls of young oysters were fished up and de¢royed, which,if returned to the asawouldthhyearhve giventhefisher msn60,0wbblsof goodcysters. lfthis coutinuesit isplain tobe secnthat the oyster fishery will soon be depleted. If the fishermen sstun the lrood oysters, howevm-, thoumds of dollars will be saved to them and the country in one season, andthelisheryif notin other ways injured will be preserved. The Messrs Kemp my that no oyster finder three inches should be taken from the sea. The third suggestion, no doubt, many of our farmers will look uponwith dis- favor. Neverthelem, facts must be sqmrely met. The Messrs. Kemp have spent many years in the oyster businem. and have a thorough knowledge of it, as cirried on throughout maritime Europe. They state positively that wherever mumel mud is taken from the sea the oystercannevergrowand that usingthe mud as manure on the farm is simply planting gold and reaping tin. The de- struction of the famous ny-vs-r beds of Bedcque bay they say, is due to nothing else but the mud digger. E’ght or nine of these diggers wi'l ruin an aereoi oyster groundinone season, and some of the oyster beds are equal in value to that of twelve ordinary farms. . Where the mud\d_igger has not been —«-"““‘u=ed in Richmond Bay the Messrs. Kemp found abundance of splendid oysters. They say they have seen no natural beds anywhere in the world to equal those of the places they Our oyster fisheryisofuntoldvalueand the fishare suretoincreaaein value, and in view of these flcts, the indtltry is well worthy the protection of the government and the oo—opsrstion of all interested. Sir Chas. Tuppc is to be commended for sending the Messrs. Kemp to Canada. The Messrs. Kemp speak in the highest tern! of the kindnu and hospitality ‘shown them by the people of Prince (lnnntw, "“ '—-—-rem gziedfrqm ttlfilittulz girl’: men. “I do sums mm. 1.1. o. t. ‘ ‘amen; eelre ttie s ' ' Olrtown. .1 so ‘ , « . , grammar, as I prefer her to i: m I JEAXES MONTEFAL H‘:§"l‘)'n2'.‘l'»§1l‘1.l}¢_=A -am] more yousful stndies, and can 1.... her to . . , u u ' u .13, M, ~nds us the lpflkifld ‘Wile P.!'0P°l' myself. The London Times of the 13th ult., under the head “Dishorning Cattle” says: John Scott and Ralph Pickering, drovers, of Newcastle-on-Tyne, were aummongd before the Newcastle board of magistrates yewerday by the Royal society for the prevention of cruelty to animals, for cutting oflthe horns of 23 bollocks, and Richard Hughes, cattle dealer, of Cole- rsine, Ireland, was summoned for causing the cruelty. The veterinary evidence given showed that the opaation caused acute suffering to the animals, and .the magistrates inflicted a line of £5 and coat; on each defendant.
