AN Sin,—I have been out of politics for | years, and am a little mixed as to men and principles—both of which appear to me to have changed during the last quarter of a century. I read the papers, and occasion- ally the Guardian falls my hands. Yesterday morning I read in that paper a letter signed “Benj. Davies,” advocating a railway through Belfast and a_ bridge across the Hillsborough. The perusal of this communication brought my mind away back to the year 1871. when a gentle- man of the same name was @ reprerenta- tive of the Belfast District, and my memory recalled a speech of his made in opposition to the building of the main line, which he designated as not being required he next hundred years. Would you please inferm an old reader and an old politician who does not keep the run of men and their ways now, what relation the Benj. Davies of old is to the Guardian correspondent of to day. into fart ENQUIRER. —-_- - SCOTT ACT AT KENSINGTON Sir,—The people of Kensington and vicinity are incensed at the way the Pet- ers Government is enforcing the Scott Act. The temperance people prosecuted one offender some time ago, and would follow it up were it not for the promises of Premier Peters to appoint a prosecutor. Now, why the de lay? There was no delay in dismissing the competent inspectors they found in office when the change of Government took place. That important duty was prompt y attended to, no matter what effect it would have on the enforcement of the CT A throughout the country; but when vacancies occurample time is taken in making appointments to suit the Premier’s purposes. Why do not Warburton, HC Macdonald, Forbes, Richards, Arthur Peters, Cummiskey and the other promi- nent temperance reformers see that the C T A is enforced? If they don’t their repu- tations wil] so seriously suffer that they will have to give us another plebiscite to prove their sincerity. TEMPERANCE. Prince Co., April 17. PERSONAL. The wind and tide however, cleared the harbor considerable and she left for the Point about 12.45. e+e+e- FRENCH IN THE SCHOOLS, Sir, —In your issue of yesterday, speak- ing of the means to be taken jin reducing the current expenditure of our Local Goy- } ernment, I notice that you advocate the charging of fees for instruction in Greek, Latin, French, and the higher mathematics. As regards the dead languages and algebra, geometry and triyonometry, I agree with you that those desiring to become proficient in these branches should pay for the same. But to say the least I think it would be unjust to deprive the Acadian population of this Province the privilege of learning to speak and write correctly their mother tongue free of charge. The French here though numbering less than ten thousand, are none the Jess entitled to that free edu- cation of which we Islanders boast; and to deprive them of it in their own tongue would be an injustice, which I know you, Mr. Editor, will not further advocate.
