An effort was made to “saw off" THE EXODUS STOPPED. _ The Toronto I\’orld, (Couservative,) accents the pleasant fact that the exodus of Canadians to the United States has finally come to an end and the tide 0! migration has distinctly turned in our favor. Quoting from United States official figures The \Vorld goes on to show how large was the exodus of Canadians to the States in years past. Thejbanner year of the immigration was 1881, when the total reached 125,391. For the preceding year it was 99,706, and for the three suc- ceeding years it was 98,205, 70,141 and 60,584 respectively. In 1885 it dropped io 38,201. For some years subsequent to 1885 the statistical tables convey the blank in- formation, “Immigrants from B. N.A. not reported,” and when the figures re-appear the immigration seems to have almost stopped. The figures read as follows: 1&6, 273; 1897, 290; 1898, 350; 1899,1,322; 19(1), 393; first nine months fiscal year 1900-1901 293. In the year 1899 when, as just stated only 1,322 immigrants from Canada settled in the States there were 11.945 lm- migrants from the States lwho settled in Canada, according to Canadian ofllcial figures. Last year the number of settlers coming to Canada from the States was about twice as great as in the previous year. These facts must have an importr ant bearing upon the growth of population in the Dominion. Since 1896 we appear to have lost but few people to the States and gained thousands in the exchange. ___¢_._.___ » There is talk of a steamer being put on the route between Summerside and Cape Tormentine during the present summer and one report is that the Jacques Cartier may be put on that route. We wouldbe glad to see the route utilised, and believe that it may yet be found a popular and paying one. But much will require to be done, especially in the way of obtaining through rates for freight and passengers before agreat success can be hoped for, and it is not likelythat this can bebrought about during the present season. The announcement is made from Uttawa that while the census shows New Bruns- wick and Nova Scotia to have made a fair increase in population during the past ten years the Island population has somewhat declined. This is regrettable,`,if true. We are satisded that the exodus to the United States from the Island has been less of late than it was years ago, but many have Columbia, :the Yukon and also to Sydn during the past year or two, which may account for the falling-off shown by the census.
